Congrats byrona !! While I would have loved to have it my wife would have been not happy with the amount of room it took up. My kids would think it is a table to eat off of while watching TV. Then there would be the cat hair and it's use as a scratching post.....

I bet....a correct and robust DNS is so very important. In the past once we got DNS correct we set up a caching DNS server on one of our monitoring servers so all the DNS calls are basically local and don't over stress the primary DNS. It worked well.

Understood. The days before email it was a phone call or hit the stairs to next floor or 8 to speak with someone. Then when email became the norm everyone reverts to it because it is easy. Then came instant messaging. At times it is convenient but I usually hate it as everyone wants to use it.

If the organization is ITIL or ISO certification based then there should be a reasonable expectation of it as it should be a requirement. In this day and age in most industries trouble tickets are a common thing. There should be buy-in and push down from the top to support this.

I don't see SNMP going away...it may need to evolve some. The fun part is to now utilize correlation of metrics, events, and status of processes to provide an overall view of a service that is distributed across multiple servers.
