I believe the purpose of being not upfront about the investment in time and personnel is for the purpose of selling professional services. In a way it is a form of marketing.

Allowing the device to have an IP on any corporate network would be a huge security risk especially if the corporate environment is in the financial realm due to the personal information that could be available as well as important information as to how a company operates and how the network and systems are set up.

Don't forget it is cold down there....toss the chiller towers and A/C. Bring on the heat exchangers. Build in enough redundancy and only have to physically visit every 90 days. Most of your systems work would likely be virtual.

It appears there is a new DYK for the pingdom and it now needs to look at the second DYK unless I totally messed this up.

I still have a working Technics turntable in storage. I have an imported Dual turntable from Germany that came over with us back in the 60's. It needs a little work to be back in top shape. Then there is the stack of vinyl I've had since the 70's....

I am sure that number is conservative...especially once you figure in those who have done the same after anesthesia, pain meds after surgery, etc.

Good stuff...but it does not begin to cover rapid growth over short periods of time.

Ah..an actual sextant. Which brings back a huge topic. So many people are dependent on technology such that when something breaks they don't know how to do it manually or have any other fallback method. It is bad enough that people can't figure out sales tax and change at a cash register by hand or with a calculator...…

Very good write-up.. Having the backups is one thing...being able to spin up a local DB as a business continuity plan is another. Are the backups where you can get to them easily and in a timely manner ?

Optimization like anything else in the IT world is a living thing...as the environment changes through patches, softwares changes/upgrades, hardware changes, etc. so does optimization. It needs to be planned for and constantly checked... Great write up kong.yang !!

one word.... TROUBLE !! meant in a very good way though Okay, Grok is more of a feeling or relating to something based on my recollection of Heinlein. Then there is a sounder or a gaggle but I think you would need a couple more to have the needed numbers. Subdued, quiet, bashful the group is not. So TROUBLE it is

Some environments will not allow for such a thing as requirements for patching, OS versions, etc. within company policy will give it a big NO. For some small shops it may be okay...
