jgherbert, one of the ways to make the event more 3AM friendly especially in the case of router/switch interfaces is to update the description to what it is connected to.. We also had a severity number and abbreviation for the support team added for those that needed monitoring. Thus only ones that fit the description…

SIEM tools are good and usually are at best near time and are usually after the fact. Several other tools take in data feeds from all sources and learns what is normal and then is able to react to abnormalities....

adatole, I like the way you step back and give this a different perspective especially for those who are not network specific in their roles or experiences.

Sounds like the manager type who thinks they know the in's and out's of the tool who goes and sets up a project (timeline, deliverables, etc.) without consulting the SME. They are then PO'd when the project is presented to the team and the SME shoots it down because it doesn't work that way and they have to go back and eat…

VM sprawl is an issue as you say. The biggest challenge is to correctly identify resource usage through proper use of tools and analysis of the situation. Just because vCpu seems underutilized doesn't mean it is over provisioned...it could be another VM is hogging all the physical cpu and you just aren't getting any…

zennifer, there should be provisions in policy to do just that and for that very reason. If not then your security policies need to be updated. In the end, if overridden enough to have to do it, be sure you have plenty of CYA papertrail to back you up.

I agree with ttl , these were quite humorous and spot on.

Good stuff Leon... I would add document and documentation. - You need to review ( audit ) your monitoring at least annually as application you monitor may change and you may not have been aware or told about. - update your documentation on what you have built and why things were built that way ( allows newbs to see why…

You forgot to calculate if he is running in parallel and/or series with the other head geeks. Of course then the variables almost take on a life of their own. Then once you bring Dez in, everything changes.

what bites is when you get a stack (pallet) of new cables and get them all installed and you do your swing over only to find one cable has bent pins on one of the connectors...you either find a good cable you dissect from the cable nest to use or order a new one and hope they have one of the correct length in stock or you…

it was the people that use your guest internet that chose to do their upgrade there...could have been an android update just as easily.
