The challenge is that many cities have nothing on the books to deal with that sort of thing. Many of those programs were in a trial period to see how they would do...it was at the end of one such trial period that all this news came out. I also know much of the same also exists for rental bikes although not to the same…

Well said Leon...just thought it was a little strange that everything is "#1". The joys of modern software that likes to "help you" !
-
Good communication between the business and IT fosters support for it and therefore potentially better budget to work with making it a "win win" for everyone.

at least I don't post "first" !

as jkump mentioned an interesting article.

okay the Dallas emergency siren thing is fairly local to me...there was no hacking involved. For anyone who knows how these sirens are activated, it is a series of subaudible tones transmitted on a specific frequency. All it takes is a half decent scanner with the capability to decode the subaudible tones to pick up the…

AI isn't what you are thinking it is. In this case it is advanced programming and adaptive "learning" that is able to filter out the normal. The key part is light is being used..so it is all in processing the resulting sensor data to determine if there is a problem. Not an application of Artificial Intelligence.

Bugging was a bit of sarcastic understatement. I actually meant "Oh, its that guy again...for the 8th time today, what does he want this time ?" It's all in fun.

Not just biased...but their evaluation methods and technique are suspect as well.

Congrats rlagrone !

We also had a "modifications section" in the code to list changes, date, ticket number, and person doing the modification. Further details were included at the point of the modification.

As long as they use their powers for good....

Drive-bys eat up your day. We had to set up a specific item on our project timesheet to account for drive-bys taking up task/project related cycles. One reason I head in to the office early is to get work done before potential drive-bys can happen...2-3 hours of quiet office makes a difference.

It was always fun to tell the new operator to go empty the bit bucket.

Agreed on the use of Kiwi for this... Orions log file monitoring in general is not that robust. Kiwi should handle the traffic and is also a good trap repository.

yes...they will always want the shiny green light that says everything is okay...especially if there is a tour going on.

I didn't realize you worked for General Dynamics....my Grand Father worked at the GD facility in Fort Worth Texas back during the F-111a and F-16 days.
-
what sort of criteria are you going to be allowing for in 3rd party application log file names ? Will there be the ability to generate alerts based upon matched strings from specific log files ? How will it handle log files that roll every few hours ? How close to real/near time will the "slurping" of log file data be ?

many dragons do well in water....so I don't think Nessie would prevail there.

I also have to agree with what rschroeder and silverbacksays mention. Public cloud pretty much makes me nervous because so many things are taken out of our hands and span of control. Yes there is a perceived savings. But in the long run, you don't really know. If there is a breach because of the vendor not being diligent…

The scope of this is huge.... It's not just hospitals and insurance companies. It is all the billing companies that work for the hospitals, the doctors, the larger clinics, the private practices, the vast number of people in data entry, nurses, assistants, office personnel, labs, etc. In many of those areas the turnover of…

I'd call the abacus volatile storage unless you have a way to lock things in place.
