The hint is the Solarwinds Flow Tools Bundle Quick Reference guide. Thus it covers the Bundle of tools. You need to look at the question and go to the section of the guide pertaining to that specific tool to find the correct answer. Attention to detail....

Probably the worst experience I have had DB wise was with CA unicenter regarding the database for their job scheduling (workload automation) portion of their suite. It would spontaneously corrupt itself after about 60-90 days requiring it to be rebuilt. You could export the jobs and schedules and rebuild it then restore…

serverless just means no service because someone else's machines are down or inaccessible.

HIPAA related MFT requirements regarding security and encryption should be similar if not identical to those for other MFT areas like financial (PCI and such). So many different sets of requirements for so many different things make like a pain. If all the different industries could agree on a consistent framework and…

Another point to think about when coding...make it and any internal annotations 3 AM friendly. No matter how much sense it makes to you now...6 months later at 3 AM when it breaks it won't make any sense unless you annotate it and code it properly. While it makes sense when you write it to embed a function call into a…

LHC Physicists: I take their approach akin to something I did back in the early days of scrubbing unix syslogs for "interesting events" that were not already specifically monitored for. In other words we watched for known events and missed things that were not watched for because of the noise. So instead of digging in the…

Depending on how the dashboard is built...is red a problem at that time ? In many cases the time component is not built in and things show red although at that time it is supposed to be "not running". The difference between "not running" because it is in maint mode vs. down because it is not running and it should be up.

Thanks wluther !

Good stuff here. I need to look into the repository and code review systems. Thanks for this blog as it provides other perspectives we can draw upon and thus broaden our set of tools/ideas for future reference.

Great post exchangegoddess ! Coordinating pertinent info between groups for certain events helps everyone to be aware of what is happening so that when calls start rolling in you have a heads up on what could be happening...

While it was a patchfest it wasn't as painful as Y2K.

sometimes part of the cost is not apparent until you get into the new environment.... At which point you realize the cast savings is not what you thought or were led to believe.

capacity planning, using past storage utilization values and watch for changes in growth. It is the sudden growth that generally kills you.

Just another reason the "cloud" should really be called "The Fog" because bad thing lurk there unseen or unknown. Since fog is just a ground based cloud it is relevant to the badge of honor or is it pain?

That loyalty thing is big as it goes a long way to employee retention.

easy solution for government agencies and less red tape and needless laws... "Just say no to IoT" Don't allow IoT. You can't track and regulate it enough to be safe, not to mention you can't ever be sure they are secure so they are already a risk. It could be months or a year or more before a vulnerability becomes known…

Open Source motorcycle... Intriguing...big thing to note is that only plastic parts were being 3D printed. Interesting to note, the big thing is distributed fabrication of parts.. (cloud sourcing? ) I will need to investigate this further...the joys of getting it certified and titled will be "fun". 2038...who here worked…

I get an NPM sales page where I can download a free trial. I guess I will go through the process..

Very good explanation of bias and how it applies. I found the predecessor article Book Review: The Death of Expertise - Thomas LaRock to be quite appropriate and intriguing as well.

savage, remington, winchester, ruger, cz, tikka, browning, or are you going old school (03A3, garand, mauser - german, swedish, cz, russian, etc.) ??/

yeah... Better be careful which drone you point that at. If it happens to be one in use by the fire department around here then it could be considered comparable to pointing a gun at a fire truck or it's crew. A nearby FD had one shot at which changed the game since it was being flown in an official capacity on the…

I know in a past life F5 allowed us to put custom perl scripts for monitoring on their devices that fed back to OpenView. It really depends in the vendor and the OS and whether as the customer you had the access needed.

I am not a VM admin, but I do know for somethings this can speed up server spinup and deployment and will fall short in some software installation due to the nature of our business. I think it will increase consistency and timeliness in server deployment since there is less likely for someone to fat finger something.

This may work for some environments...although I see challenges with regards to heavy database apps. I am sure as time goes by this will develop and evolve.

lab environments are hardly ever the same as production. Plus they never seem to have a good representation of the production configuration. Ideally a lab/dev environment is patched before a QA/Test environment. The QA/Test world should have at the least a representative monitor and alert of every type in production. You…
