There is a big difference in the replication/DR arena versus backup.

Joshua Biggley Congrats on MVP !!! Hang on...it's a fun Ride !!

What bites is when you go to rebuild a server and want a full restore only to find out the backup team had been ignoring errors for a long period of time and you don't have a viable backup anymore...... I miss the days of a weekly full backup with daily incrementals and the ability to request a full backup before doing any…

got to keep up with your licence documents...especially if you have many iterations (OS instances, deployed agent instanes, etc.) in case the vendor does a true up audit.....

Thanks kong.yang, I look forward to hearing more on this topic.

Tools of that sort do have a load. There is a tool for Oracle called "precise". Great tool for troubleshooting, analytics, and general DB monitoring. But as you turn up the detail or microscope you also turn up the load on the DB. The same should be true for any other similar tool. All monitoring comes at a price of…

it also helps immensely to have common method of monitoring things...naming conventions, rules for adding/removing items. Then as a global entity everyone will understand how things are configured at each site.

One of the most fun/frustrating experiences was with Oracle RAC (Oracle cluster) on a cluster of AIX servers (6 instances). Every now and then one of the AIX servers would spontaneously reboot. In working with the unix team we discovered it was Oracle RAC that was doing it. What happens is that 1 Oracle instance is the…

jgherbert, again another excellent episode in what has become a "Thwack Opera". While entertaining, which they are, the episodes open up perspectives to some of those that haven't been in those shoes or had to deal with issues/troubleshooting at that level. Thank you and Merry Christmas !

@"melonizame" todays question is pretty simple...don't read too much into it. What is the one thing that is definitely not supported... R2 levels and SP can be ignored.

worst internet...sounds like my life. I exist on fixed wireless myself. I hear the constipated face on the call taker when I call in and tell them where their problem is...which means they have to go fix it then instead of pushing it off a day or three to research.

I also believe that the U.K. and Europe in general uses diesel over gasoline (petrol) in many cases. Diesel has more energy per unit volume than gasoline and is cheap to produce as it is a by-product of making gasoline. I also believe we export a fair amount of diesel to countries in Europe.

Your suggestion is a good one. Solutions do exist and have for a while now. The challenge is the cost, software and hardware, complexity, and talent pool to setup and administer a full end to end solution. Some aspects need to be ARM (Application Response Measurement) which requires it is coded to provide internal…

ugh..the cloud. We are seeing more of it. Granted I am not as involved on the security side, but it still offers challenges for general monitoring as well. Thank you for the blog !

Reminds of of the early days of Automated Operations back around 1990/91. We took half a decade of operations experience across multiple platforms (Mainframe, tandem, vax [vms & unix], various other flavors of unix to include aix, hpux, sgi-irix, sco, bsd, solaris, etc., as/400, system 36, lan/wan gear, and so forth. We…

Exactly..programming, cooking, even systems management are a series of steps or procedures added together in various ways to provide a specific outcome.

This has been a great tool for us since we don't have access to all the systems we monitor. By being able to see a specific event, it allows for us to be able to more quickly and correctly build alerts related to events. What would make this event better would be able to point it to non-windows application logs for the…
