Seems like the S in Security is also $$. Opensource or not...they all take time to stand up and configure and then comes the fine tuning. Some of the "best" SIEM tools takes quite a while to set up and a team to maintain. BYOD brings in so many other threat vectors..it would drive me nuts so it is a good thing I am not…

I believe they are looking for the most correct answer.

The purpose of an air-gapped machine is prevent bad actors from accessing it. In this case you have to allow it to be infected first and then have another infected device next to it. Okay, it may work but if you get bit by this then you probably deserved it.

That question gets asked a lot....the challenge is determining the answer...which is usually in that data we talked about last week.

Did you refresh your page in the browser before you tried again ?

I speak of consistency in how a specific thing/object/data value is referenced. For example, in a previous life the company was implementing a huge CMDB. In the end it ended up shelfware after tons of money was thrown at it. One of the issues was how a store was referred to. There were over 20 different ways to refer to…

The one size that fits all today may not fit next year or in 2 -3 years. Is you shop growing? How fast? Can it scale in a supportable and maintainable manner ? Have you investigated how the tool works under the covers ? This can drastically affect the usability of the tool in your environment. As mentioned…

Agreed, without the communication and "relationships", it is hard to get things done in a timely and efficient manner most of the time.

In a word Yes ! The reason being is that it helps other to see what you can do and helps to generate more ideas. It can also potentially lead to additional sales.

At a previous life we had motor-generator units to provide clean power to the mainframe. Electric in nature with a motor that ran at high RPM to run a generator/alternator. This separated the power feed from the utility company and therefore due to the rotational momentum able to maintain clean power during brownouts and…

During the time of the cutover I am sure someone will be designing a t-shirt "The Day Thwack was down" or "Thwack Broke My Day". Of course others will likely be rocking gently in the corner or checking every other minute..."is Thwack up yet?"

I will echo jkump words...good stuff.

pertaining to Dongle This... Apple can continue to require specific dongles for things because people have consumed the Kool Aid and bought into their "lifestyle". Many companies are selling a lifestyle in order to get the residuals on accessories. Apple is one but a bit more quiet about it than say Harley Davidson. It is…

Agreed cloud is useful for startups and small companies...it would also be useful for POC's. Regarding backups.....back when I was an operator, we maintained a daily and weekly backup onsite with copies in offsite storage. Thus we could restore up to a week back quickly but maintained monthly backups offsite for a year.

I got into this aspect of IT back when automated operations was the new buzz word. "Lights Out" data centers were the dream and a topic widely discussed in the trade rags and the mainframe still ruled. It was a new world and we were blazing new trails. In the end, I work to make sure the people in the trenches have the…
