Reminds of my previous life (decades ago) as an operator, our data center was under the roof/parking deck of a portion of our building. It leaked. We went from plastic tarps to channel the water to barrels between the "roof" and the drop ceiling. Eventually we went to trays the shape of ceiling tiles but about 2" deep to…

Exactly... !

The original posting of this was 5 years ago...likely the location of things have changed since then.

100+% CPU is possible on an uncapped AIX LPAR....

I had to scroll down for the registration banner to show up....but then when I click on it I get nothing.

Interesting. I wonder how long it takes Cisco to process a file it hasn't seen before it issues a hash (good or bad) ? This may be one of the better uses of the could...until someone figures out how to exploit it.

For me it depends on which phone app gets my attention...it could be to go literally fight a fire. Regarding my IT career, my family doesn't fully understand. They know I deal with monitoring networks and servers and that is about all they "understand".

Very good info....while not being on the VM admin side myself, the Java information is very useful as we monitor a number of java environments in production and it will give us something else to consider when we see performance issues.
-
exactly, statistics allows you to make the numbers lie in your favor.

monitoring from different points of view...you nailed it. That is something I constantly bring up.

It is funny that computing started in the cloud on mainframes. You couldn't afford one or the people to maintain, but you paid for time (cycles) on someone else's machine to do your work. Costs came down and then companies could afford their own and didn't have to share a mainframe with others. Then we went distributed,…

Excellent !!!

I have lived that world...in a large environment you need to monitor and automate as close to the source as possible otherwise your management platform is having to do all the work. You need to switch to a management by exception model. Only send the exceptions up to reduce all the noise and traffic.

thanks njoylif !

I would think knowledge of the LAMP stack over just python would be more relevant since it covers the OS,Apache, DB, and python or perl. While python is a great language, the syntactical space requirements can take code that is copy and pasted or even forwarded though email to result in code that is now broken.

Congrats to silverbacksays and pballard !

Yes, what blsanner said...I couldn't get to it as quickly as he did.

Interesting stuff. I am going to bookmark it and re-read it later....after I have had some more coffee and bacon.

I agree that the tool should not have been responsible for the engineers debacle. He did not do his part to ensure what he scheduled was correct. Thus policies and procedures were not adequate or were ignored. This is a situation where peer review might have saved his bacon.

Couldn't get to the China's social credit article since it is blocked by McAfee. I will need to check it out from a non-company device.

What, you had floppies? I originally learned basic in the mid 70's on my grandfathers TRS-80 model 1. Everything got stored on cassette tape or you had to re-enter it. I think it had 4k of memory. By the time I got to Pascal, I was in college. Assembly was a pain in the head since it gave me headaches. VaxVMS assembly was…

What Leon Adato said about checking with your admin assistant's....they pretty much rule the coop and can and will make life miserable for you if you don't take care of them. On the other hand, if you go out of your way to take care of them, they will make life so much easier for you and your team.

likewise an interesting post.

so that would be a COG (Cluster Of Geeks)...or in this case an HCOG (Head Cluster Of Geeks).
