Cookies as a Service...has an interesting rabbit hole to dive down. Who actually owns the cookie ? Is this pre mastication or post mastication ? How do you deal with a cookie that is past the post mastication process and has been swallowed if the service desires to have it back? does the service require a subscription for…

ecklerwr1, in some ways I am holding out hoping to see a large Yeti Cup with a solarwinds logo on it showing up in there. Oh DanielleH, hint hint !!!

just being able to run Oracle on a linux server was a big thing a few years back....saved us a ton of money. This is just another step forward.

problem with those labs are that once they show them to you they'll have to kill you.

Spread the word and have others vote it up !!

Establish a rule regarding alerts...if it is not actionable by a human (critical) then don't show it. It is hard to do in a shop that was a mom and pop and has had rapid growth. Some people are info junkies and need to see all the data all the time. To them, go dig through splunk or what ever log aggregation tool you have.…
-
don't forget MTTI - "Mean Time To Innocence" for all the things you can be blamed for when you do the monitoring and alerting.
-
My team focuses primarily on monitoring and alerting. While we exist to support other teams and the business, we also have a relationship (need) based relationship with the server support teams and the network team. * Are you part of a siloed team at work? If so, how do you support virtualization (or other technologies…

Just because an interface is up from the inside of a device does not mean it is accessible from the outside. So if a multi homed host is showing all interfaces up but there is a routing problem elsewhere you may not be able to ping one of the interfaces and therefore that ability lets you know that something is broken.…

While I can't get away to destress as I would like...even 2 hours of road therapy I get on the motorcycle to and from the office on a daily basis helps. That is provided I don't burst into flames if I have to sit in stop and go traffic on the highway when it is 100+ outside.

Interesting as well although I am sure they still have the same budgetary challenge as mentioned in todays question of the May Mission.
-
I still have a few of the books from back in the day and somewhere I still have my box of die.

Agreed !

Ah...it can be good and bad. I've seen no wireless connectivity which includes bluetooth along with disablement of USB and no write to CD.

Keep the comments and votes coming !!

That's the answer I was looking for.... Thank you.

Ah yes...reactive targets. The ring of the steel gong or steel plates at a distance. Swinging targets or targets that move when hit. exploding fruit or old milk jugs of water... ......Then you have tannerite.

Way to go crwchief6 !!! we need to see a video of it in action !!

sometimes it is a "well I've got this tool" sort of one man upmanship that you see at the directors or above level when they go to conferences and such. That way they can boast that they have the biggest/baddest/top of the line tool and it is only for show and bragging rights. This has gone on for decades I am afraid...

that sounds heavy man...

Standardization and policy for how things are done as well as documentation... Great series.
-
communication between IT and the business is critical...ITIL provides a good framework but it needs to be supported from the top down or it won't work...then the rest is tough to accomplish...

It will have to be stellar , super charged with caffeine for the late night sysadmin, mellow but tasty, and available in beans or ground.

This all becomes even more entangled when you have to extend your network and by extension your monitoring into other countries where the laws regarding privacy and what you can and cannot do at work are entirely different. What you can and cannot track change drastically.

This looks like it is going to become more interesting.... This sort of environment IAAS and SAAS may become a development arena to offload some of the physical load... The question we had was is there a way to look into the Amazon or Azure environment and see what resources are assigned to your account (programatically)…

Excellent points sqlrockstar ! I know of some companies that also log DB journaling so that if there is an issue, they can go back to a point in time and start to roll things forward to recreate things. It also allows you to recreate things in a dev/test environment and step your way through to see where a corruption…

We almost need one for cheesy science fiction series in the 60's/70's Irwin Allen would have several entries there.... Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea for starters. Then there was Space 1999, Buck Rogers, $6 million Man, The Bionic Woman, Battlestar Galactica, and others...

#bumpsquad lets push this over 1000 !

I do agree on the need to document what you are doing during troubleshooting as you may miss something when you are trying to go back and review the entire incident. This is especially true at 3AM. You may not be awake as you think you are.....

Ah...but does transparent correspond to weight or mass ? But then again weight and mass are not the same.
