Daily bump for effect...

spammergate...reminds me of the early days of email and Sanford Wallace aka "Spamford" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanford_Wallace who plagued people back in the mid to late 90's. Sad thing is he is still around and last year got into trouble again for the same thing but on facebook…

You have to watch your monitoring tools from outside that "realm". You have to be on the outside looking in even when it comes to watching your tools. It is not just sufficient to ensure process are running, you need to have a way to validate all monitoring paths are working (snmp trap, log file events, file existence…

Another daily bump for awareness

Once had an IT director promise 5 "9's" to the business. Between vendor software bugs(application, san switch, etc.), telco issues and a variety of "mishaps", it was blown in the first quarter. That year we didn't even make 4 "9's". While those numbers are great to strive for and can be attained...it is not easy or cheap.…

whats amazing is when you catch a bass that is literally the same size as the lure... I had that happen with a devils horse topwater lure The baby largemouth was literally as long as the lure about 5"-6"...it was early summer and they were hitting anything that moved.

Scalability is important but can you support it as it scales ? If it becomes unsupportable at large scale then scalability is out the window. Supportability much be in parity with scale.

cobrien , as I mentioned earlier it would help. familyofcrowes indicated, other tools are tied into this and the page refresh can be awkward at times when trouble shooting or showing an executive something...Heck, even during tours we sometimes put up a background image of a Orion screen so it doesn't refresh while the…

On that note, some people or groups want/need different refresh rates. A global setting is not appropriate or granular enough...

I think there is more to the postmortem than is listed: - clearly define the problem that occurred and what/whom was affected and to what extent. - provide the root cause - how did we determine there was a problem ? - how was the problem resolved ? - can this problem occur again ? - how can we do to prevent this from…

The quote "inconceivable" is uttered from my mouth on a regular basis usually surrounding an event that "demands" some level of sarcasm in response.
-
Well I saw the need, I posted it, I championed it, I had the #bumpsquad promote it, in the end I understand the need it now...but I have not given up.

You can turn the pool into a firepit....but you can never take the pool out of that section of ground.

That would be Thursday of next week. Try one above it for today (#9).

challenges of working at home vs working at work

Much of this could also be built into SAM and NPM..specifically the various log files it can monitor and the correlation rules and actions... While we won't use LEM here, it has parts that would make NPM and SAM so much more powerful and useful !!!

that would be a different kind of radiation.

once you roll up the data you have lost details that can be important. I agree that the production DB needs to be kept to a modicum of data, but you need the long term details in a data warehouse for real analysis. By using a data warehouse, you can do all of your reporting and such off line (not hitting the production…

bad things happen.... On that note, some applications to integrate email with company email on your phone or tablet leave the option to the company to wipe the device even though they don't own it or all of the data on it.

Not quite keep expert knowledge of old software...but rather copious notes, tips, tricks, how-to's, issues and resolutions. I keep these in simple text files so they can be read on any platform. Regarding old versions of software or OSes, I have seen that in many past lifetimes. Sometimes you have a legacy app that there…

We maintain internal documents (policies and procedures) on sharepoint. To help everyone maintain familiarity on the different monitors and alerts we rotate one person as the Engineer On Duty (EOD) each day. They handle all the incoming problems and the daily checks so the load is distributed and allows for the others to…

Agreed byrona on the topic idea. Maybe a couple of people could collaborate...you know...good cop/bad cop format.

This has been needed.

Edited embryo's... The stuff of science fiction coming to be. Defective genes and disease eliminated.... Who is to really say this hasn't already been whisked away for a top secret project or an embryo has been implanted...just because they say it hasn't been done doesn't mean it hasn't. While the implications for good are…
