Trying to get the right mix of memory and CPU for our SQL is like a moving target. We are getting closer and closer each month. Thanks for the article and it helps explain and clarify a few things I have read in other posts. I have learned to put a reservation for the OS (about 10% or so) then the rest for SQL.

Great Article, could not agree more. It seems most of the time you get some pointing to the next person to take care of.

Point are coming. There is a delay with the Holidays and they points have to be validated through Solarwinds internal process. They should be awarded sometime before the 10th.

This is the second reference to Goats I have heard from folks out of Austin. The first was last week at the Pheonix SWUG (Best SWUG Ever [GOAT Qualified] that folks in Austin were doing Yoga with Goats. Now Kong, is mentioning Goats here. Does Solarwinds intend to adopt a goat as its mascot shortly?

Just remember, when you are creating documentation, you are also doing a CYA (cover your A$$) or a gird my loins action in case no one is around to assist.

To have Change Management Software is one thing, to have a process of Change Management is another. When it comes down to it the Organization (at all levels) must agree and perform the described process in order for it to work. The process is also a "Living" function of the Organization, because as technology and personnel…

I took the question from a standpoint coming out of the Network/Management Team.

ethan.banks makes some good points and Jfrazier, rschroeder, and byrona provide good data, but at the end of the day we can have SNMP, WMI, or whatever protocol/processs or "Telemetry" that would be of no use if there was not a good way to display the data so that all levels of the IT organization can use and react to…

If we have the MIBs for the FirePowers can we add them into Solarwinds if we are not using the 12.2? If so, where? I have not had to add MIBs to Solarwinds in years and lots has changed!

The ability of the database server to sync with its peer from a geographical remote location and the pollers to adjust is what we are keeping our eye on.

Really enjoyed this article. Good best practices to teach the kids as they start getting on the computer for school and homework.

sqlrockstar, interesting vehicle, wondering:::: Is the engine in the rear of the car? Is this a Flintstone type car? I am guessing you will have to make several trips to deliver cupcakes. I am thinking there are room for maybe a half dozen.

I am looking forward to the change, change is good.

this is too funny. We have an "Engineering Group" in another city that does this exact same thing. We (DataCenters) can get things working the correct way, then they will come in, change it, switch out equipment, then take off with out checking to see if it works. Leaving us to get it to work on the new equipment.

I am interested on how they will format. Also, It might be nice if they gave more details instead of some of the nebulous suggestions. I would go with DISA STIGs then walk through PCI or NIST.
