The Portnox Cloud RADIUS & 802.1X Supplicant SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM) template continuously performs real authentication transactions against a RADIUS server and measures the outcome, response time, and authentication success. Rather than simply checking service availability, it validates the entire authentication path from the perspective of an actual endpoint or supplicant.
This template sends authentication requests to a RADIUS server, either over normal UDP RADIUS or RADSEC, then handles the full exchange and reports whether the server returned an Access-Accept, Access-Reject, or an intermediate challenge.
It is good for validating authentication flows end-to-end, especially when you need more than a basic PAP test. This template includes:
- PAP and MAB for simple credential or MAC-based checks
- EAP-TLS for certificate-based auth
- EAP-TTLS/PAP for tunneled password auth
- PEAP/MSCHAPv2 for tunneled enterprise Wi-Fi style auth
- Standard RADIUS over UDP and RADIUS over TLS
- Optional NAS and station attributes so requests look like they came from a switch, AP, or wireless client
- Debug output with packet parsing and fragment details for troubleshooting interoperability issues
Use this template for:
- Verifying that a RADIUS or RADSEC server is reachable and responding correctly
- Reproducing client authentication flows without needing an actual switch, AP, or supplicant
- Testing certificate trust, server name validation, and mutual TLS behavior
- Troubleshooting EAP handshakes, fragmentation, PEAP phase-2 behavior, and TTLS tunneled auth
The main strength of this template is that it is not just a packet sender. It has enough protocol logic to behave like a real EAP client across multiple challenge rounds, including inner TLS handling and PEAP/MSCHAPv2 processing. This makes it useful for both functional testing and deeper protocol troubleshooting.
