Ok, gotcha. I also see the same behavior with an account that does not have Admin privileges. I looked in the Core Administrator Guide and did not see any mention of this requirement.1 -

You could create a map with custom icons to match those in the reference. The map background would be a stencil of the switch with the custom icons superimposed over the appropriate port.1
