A Quarter of Firms Don’t Know if They’ve Been Breached That number seems low. I think it's closer to 100% because even firms that know they have been breached likely have no idea about how many breaches they have suffered. My company has been breached before. I'm 100% positive we've had breaches that were not caught or…

* Define the problem. * Gather and analyze relevant information. * Construct a hypothesis on the probable cause for the failure or incident. * Devise a plan to resolve the problem based on that hypothesis. * Implement the plan. * Observe the results of the implementation. * Repeat steps 2-6. * Document the solution. Love…

Love the comment in the blog about the "Internet isn't entirely broken". Made me giggle.

It’s interesting to look back, examine the events and associated time-series data to see how close to the root cause signal I got before being mired in the noise or vice-versa. The root cause of troubleshooting this IT career is one that I’m addicted to, whether it’s the change and the opportunity or all the gains through…

I'm thankful for my 10GB Cisco switch that provides lightning-fast network connectivity. I'm thankful for our Pure storage that allows us to store our SQL databases and gives users fast access. I'm thankful for Orion that allows us to monitor our entire network. I'm thankful for PDQ deploy because it's an amazing tool to…

Great post! I loved the link to the moon base conspiracy. It's not completely out of the realm of possibility. Our backup and redundancy plan call for frequent snapshots of our servers. Restoring a VM from a snapshot is ridiculously easy.

Senate Puts ISP Profits Over Your Privacy Gotta love The Man.

Great article! Loads of good tips. Shared this with my IT team.

I'm not at all surprised by the article about Vizio spying on users. I have 3 Vizio TVs. Luckily I never run apps from Vizio but use other devices to run apps to my TV's.

IT ADMINS WHO, OR CAN'T FIND THEM DON'T KNOW WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT Not only is it hard to find responsible parties, sometimes they flat out HIDE from systems managers to avoid doing the work they are responsible for.

True collaboration requires data that is: * Integrated * Visualized * Correlated * Traceable across teams and groups * Understandable This is exactly the thing my V.P. is looking to achieve. Carefully document your processes and implement log and event management. To help keep a close eye on all of the data that’s passing through a network and to ensure its security, establish a documentation system. Begin by documenting a consistent set of processes for database backup and restore, data encryption, detection…

As a Systems Manager, I am diligent about taking the time to setup my personal IoT devices securely. However, it's been proved that millions of basic users don't have the knowledge to do this. *sigh*. Thought this article on Mairi (The Future) was pretty interesting.…

SAM can help hunt down those pesky issues.

I agree with Richard's comment. While not a fan of big brother, security needs some regulations to ensure safety for end users.

Others blamed the consumer, the person purchasing and installing the IoT devices without “reading the fantastic manual” and properly securing the device from the treacheries of the internet. A problem borne of ignorance. How could we expect the average non-techie consumer to be aware of SSL vulnerabilities? In my humble…

How Do Individual Contributors Get Stuck? A Primer Interesting collection of thoughts on how people get stuck on certain tasks, and why. I often get stuck helping other people when I need to be working on my main projects or other tasks. My office can only be accessed by a badge card. Only 2% of the people in my building…

How about those transparent screens and hand gesture controls from Minority Report and Iron Man?

I was just given the task of hunting down a device that triggered a brute force attack warning on our Cisco WLC. After digging into it, the big freakout was due to some brilliant end user entering the wireless password incorrectly 20 different times in a 60-minute time frame. Glad to have the alert but not happy to hunt…

Thanks for another great monthly mission!

Great post! IT seagulls do exist and seem to be multiplying. We overcome their obstacles by pretty much excluding them from the project.

We don't have too many vulnerable routers. Our devices are pretty locked down by security.
