Thank you. Yes. As noted in the subject, 9.5 SP4. This is the third problem I have had with various services in 9.5. The first was a web site issue that SP4 addressed. The other is an intermittent issue with the Module Engine. And now this one. I will open a ticket this afternoon or on Monday and post whatever solution we…

timf, that helps a lot. Thanks. I was particularly curious about running pollers in a mixed environment of standalone servers and blades. Sounds like you went above and beyond with optimizing your db. I moved my db to a large EVA SAN and using AWE for 32 bit SQL, bumped available memory to 6 GB. Those 2 things are what did…

No worries there. I already have a very large Orion implementation and am looking to install a 3rd polling engine. My boss asked about the possibility of moving to blade servers for just the polling engines, hence the question. I have a stand alone server for the db, with the actual db living on a very speedy SAN.

Question #2 is: Is this expected with NTA upon upgrading NPM from 9.1 to 9.5 and are my NTA settings still saved/accessible somewhere? This is not mission critical but I would like to learn and know this.Your NTA settings during the upgrade should be preserved. The only thing to verify after upgrade is the "Automatic…

I have been experiencing a similar issue but not positive it is exactly the same. It seems that when we add new nodes or interfaces to our secondary poller, it will crash usually within 24 hours. 9.5 SP4, 32 bit Windows, 2 pollers, standalone SQL server, etc. The netperfmon service will eventually crash, after having gone…

Quick update: I am working with support to track down the issue. I have cleaned up a few issues with the db (possibly unrelated), and they are evaluating a new set of diagnostics. sraiwt, how many polling engines are you running? What is your environment like? It seems like the problem is a bit more noticeable since I…

When you are noticing the high memory usage, how much is being consumed by the Solarwinds.BusinessLayerHost.exe service (observable in the Windows Task Manager)? If that is the culprit, see the thread I started here: They are looking into it. If that service is not the issue, then please tell us what service(s) are…

Interesting. Thanks a lot for the info, timf.

Thank you. On any given day, I may have ~15 web users online at one time. Is that "many"? Also, did you find the process of moving the web site difficult or easy? Any gotchas you ran into?

Hello, the service crashed again last night. Should I open a case with support? I am fairly certain the underlying cause is that the current db server disks cannot keep up, therefore the NetFlow service on the polling engine (separate systems) continuously consumes more memory until it overflows. Shouldn't it simply…

Hello, can you please post the workaround? I just started running NetFlow in Orion again, after addressing some other db issues. The NetFlow service crashed last night. The error from the Event Viewer on my system is: Event Type: Error Event Source: NetFlowService Event Category: None Event ID: 0 Date: 5/4/2009 Time:…

That is exactly what I needed. Actually, the PDU per second. Thank you! So, is ~1200 PDUs per second a lot? Because this is only from a single Packetshaper...

Hah! Thanks Chris. I was looking for it in the web interface. Figures. It's always the little things...

Thank you. I will not be allowing IP SLA to auto configure any of my devices and of the devices it will be using, none of them are using problematic IOS versions.
-
The nodes already exist in Orion. I will be working on this more this morning and will let you know if I figure anything else out. If I cannot get it working, should I enter a ticket? Not certain how that is supposed to work with an Eval product?

*crickets* Guess I'll just give it a shot.

njoylif is correct. I run 4 pollers, including the primary. We are monitoring 1100+ nodes and ~20,000 elements. As I brought on each new poller, I moved a bunch of nodes over to it. With each new set of nodes, the recommended numbers in the PPS utility increased. If you are unaware, an easy way to move nodes to your new…

Um... I don't know what changed but I deleted the software and reinstalled and it worked this time... ??

I do not run any virtual servers but did read quite a bit on it here and in the Admin guide. I think Congo hit it right on the head. If it were me, I would press my boss(es) to keep the SQL installations on standalone servers and move to virtualize everything else.

This does not appear to change already existing operations? By default we use the ip address that Orion knows about. We do allow you to specify the source ip address by editing the node properties in the ip sla node admin area. * If you are on the IP SLA summary view, click on IP SLA Manager Settings * Click on Manage IP…

Thanks, vhcato. Yes, I was running into extreme I/O problems with the current disks, especially when they were in RAID 5. I was seeing average disk queue lengths between 400 - 800, just with NPM and NCM (NTA disabled). Changing over to RAID 10 got the avg disk queue length down to about 200. A couple of config changes in…

Thanks you. That is the direction I am tending toward. I do have some leeway to decide how the install goes. I am choosing RAID 10 because that is what the NPM docs recommend. It made a huge positive difference moving to RAID 10, even with the current slow 7200 RPM SATA drives we currently have. The largest I have ever…

Never mind. I just found this thread: Looks like it is not possible to do what I wanted.
-
Additional: This happens for all users, logging out/in does not fix the problem. The actual error happens when I click any item in the "Event Summary" window, such as "1 Node Rebooted".
-
I should add that when this problem occurs, it skews my graphs and messes up my "Top 10" type of reports, wrongly showing an interface as flooded. This is a huge problem for us.
-
My understanding is that they moved the majority of node management to the web interface and it can no longer be done in the Orion System Manager. As you noted, everything is greyed out. When I click the "Manage Node" button in the system manager, it opens a web browser. If it isn't supposed to be this way, then I am…

What is your polling completion percentage? If it drops below 99%, then that helps point to the problem. Also, are you running your SQL db on a separate server with fast disks (raid 10)? What is your average disk queue length?
-
Do you have a view with "Polling Engine Status"? If so, what is the "Last Database Sync" value for each of your polling engines? Just want to confirm that not only are your pollers still running but they are also still syncing to your database. I see this from time to time. It would get weird when an interface I know is…

Hi, If one of your flow repository boxen is linux, then I suggest you use flow-fanout. Depending on how your repository is currently setup (ie. what software you are currently using to capture the flows), this is very simple to do. The man page for flow-fanout has good information. This is what I am using to send flows to…
