Nice specs. You may be the person I spoke with about this earlier but are you running 64 bit Windows? Seems you would have to be, to take advantage of all that RAM? Also, I verified the problem still existed. We made some changes to some troubling tables in the db. They will not be fully implemented until db maintenance…

Please confirm that all your servers are 64 bit Windows? I am running 32 bit Windows on all my servers; however, I think one of your problems has got to be the SQL server. How many hard drives does it have, what are their specs, and what sort of RAID are they configured for? Do the db's you mentioned live on that system or…

Hey guys. I will try renaming again this afternoon or tomorrow. A bit busy right now. As I indicated earlier or in an email, the last time I tried renaming an operation, it made things more confusing because it renamed that op for *all* SLA nodes. I may have changed the wrong thing, though. The other thing is that even if…

Ticket 146787. Working with support on it now.

If you have a current license that is still good and being used, this screen does not appear. Instead it showed the current license with no option of entering a new one. Once I got back from the holidays, the eval license had revoked, I was presented with this screen, and was able to enter the new licensing info. It…

We are apparently not running in evaluation mode, then. I will be back in the office next week and will research it further, then. I just wanted to make certain we were using the proper license.

Interesting. Yes, I am currently running 2 engines and may eventually install a 3rd. Is this issue noted in the docs anywhere? I had been under the impression that the IP SLA module only had to be installed on the primary poller but would work with SLA nodes being polled by any of the pollers in our Orion instance.

Michael, When I took over administration of our Orion suite about a year ago, we were also having severe issues, the majority of which ended up being performance related due to insufficient hardware. Like Donald, I run a large Orion implementation and can not imagine it all running on a single box. It isn't about having 1…

aliendan: Are you using Cirrus? I just took over administration of our Orion implementation. We have been having extreme performance issues and I am looking at recommending to my boss that we put the SQL db on a SAN. Solarwind support recommended not to do this because of some sort DNS issue (too many look ups), which…

I am not positive but I think this is all related to the Module Engine croaking due to the associated Windows service called "SolarWinds.BusinessLayerHost.exe" intermittently freezing up. Case #120531 opened with the following info: "I see intermittent problems within Orion when trying to edit a node monitored by the…

Oh, and yes, in my case we have the SQL Server on its own dedicated system with the db itself backended on a very beefy SAN. I had run into the avg disk queue length problem on the db server and this solution has worked exceptionally well for us. Our SQL server is a 32 bit system and we were also having memory issues with…

Thanks a lot for the in depth explanation!

Thanks. You said you have 4 disks in a RAID 10 for the SQL db to live on. What type of disks are they (SATA, SAS, ?)? I am running NPM, NCM, APM, and trying to run NTA. I have 2 polling engines, a separate server for Cirrus to run on, and a dedicated SQL server that is probably going to get upgraded so it can handle the…

No worries, ekonowal. I grumbled about the thin client at first, too. As noted, I have been pleasantly surprised.
-
Thanks for the info and advice everyone. SP4 for 9.5 appears to have addressed the other issues I was noticing.
-
Interesting. Thanks for the update. I would have thought that increasing the number would have solved your issue?? On my secondary polling engine, the Polls Per Second wizard currently recommends 82/65. I have it set to 100/100. That polling engine has just over 7,000 elements and seems to be doing okay.

Anyhow, yes, still persue upgrading the hardware and do open a support ticket. Then we'll see what we can do to fix your problem. David, Case #94908 opened. Would you mind emailing/calling me on this when you have a moment?
-
Hi David. It may have been a different David that I worked with before. It was on NPM issues that were related to my SQL db disks being the bottleneck. Nothing to do with NTA. I will open the case in a bit. Thanks again to you all for taking the time to answer questions here.

I feel your pain with the slower spokes in a network. In my network, we have some remote sites serviced by frame relay satellite uplinks. Most of these sites have only 1 or 2 T1s, with all of the latency that comes with satellite. In these cases, we had to set up a cheapo flow collector system at each remote site. This is…

9.5.1. I just upgraded when bringing a 4th polling engine online. May have found the issue... I went into node management to redisover and repoll that WLC. Now I have that WLC showing up twice and #1 is no longer showing. Just tried adding #1 back in and now it is the one displaying this error...

Thank you! Just got an email from them. I appreciate the work all of you put into this. :) Not sure if this also addresses the OP's issue, otherwise I'd suggest it as a solution.

Certainly! At first, we will be moving into a dual stack implementation. The goal is for native IPv6, though. I have only started considering this whole deal but it looks like this will affect many things within my Orion implementation. For instance, IPv6 requires netflow v9. v5 no worky. So what does this mean for NTA?…
-
Actually, I am not positive the issue still remains. Sorry. I am still researching it on my own, while support does their stuff. Regardless, will let you know what we find out.
-
JJasiunas, I occasionally have to restart the HTTPS service, as well. Nobody has an idea on the netflow question? Perhaps I will post it in the NTA forum.
-
Just a quick update: I've not opened a ticket on this yet, as I'm still collecting data/symptoms. So far, and this is very tentative, it appears these 2 services 'freeze' only when nodes are added or many nodes are edited (new pollers added, etc). I will eventually open a ticket, just trying to pinpoint this, as it has…

NPM. I already posted this over there, once I realized where the IPv6 search took me. :-)

When I inherited administration of our Orion suite, we were having similar issues. As Brandon said, it can be a number of things. In my case, the biggest problem was the DB server disk I/O load. First thing I would check is your average disk queue length. The admin guide has some rules of thumb on what that number should…

Thank you. However, I took the steps that Chris indicated and the current eval license shows up. It is not changeable. Where do I actually edit the existing license to change to my new one? Or do I have to wait for the current license to expire?
