Data is extremely valuable. However data without good employees loses much of its value. People are what make sense of the data and people are what make decisions from the data. As the world gets more automated this is shifting. So, in a data driven world how do we keep a focus on what is really important - People.

There once was a man from Nantucket When asked to write a poem His mind got stuck - ed Try as he might Each time he did fight To find the right words Till finally he said . . . Awww - Never mind this is too much trouble

I've been trying for 3 years to get rid of literally a room full of Cisco equipment including a couple of big chassis. We get a little traction, I pull all the model numbers and values and it dies. Can you imagine how much value is lost in 3 years of sitting in a room. Alas, now we have retired our Aruba equipment and I'm…

Nearly 70% of IT pros respond to one-off user requests daily. I'm actually surprised that this number isn't higher. Everywhere I've worked there is a "procedure" for ticketing, but there's always those that fail to follow it.

Government is guilty, but then so is most other entities - if it's not working, throw money at it. You can't buy your way to success, security, or whatever you are trying to accomplish. As an example: a city in which I used to live had one high school that was below all the others, in every measure. The solution, build a…

At a time when it's popular to dis the "big guys" we all tend to gravitate to them. Of course not everyone falls into this, but we all know people that "hate" Microsoft, but wouldn't even consider Apple or Linux. Those that "hate" google, but are all to happy to buy an android phone and use a gmail account.

I don't currently own the backup system, but I do interact with it on occasion. I like what we have but look forward to seeing how this all washes out with SolarWinds.

You said it before I could - I would LOVE an set of IT Crowd action figures.

So much of the industry is about "fast." Personally, I think DevOps should (often, not always) slow down a bit. The better the communications and understanding on the part of all parties the more likely that there will be success in the end. It will also reduce errors and downtimes.

According to the book those people from Mars would be called - men!

If everything is important then nothing is important. It is so critical to have some sort of levels or priorities to determine what takes precedence over other things. That takes planning and good communications with all departments involved.

Old feelings and attitudes. As we move through the year people act like people (how irritating) and because of that we upset, confuse, bother and create a million other feelings. Then at the holidays we get all the pressures of family, shopping, traffic, reduced staff - all adding irritation on top of irritation. I want to…

Great idea, I'll get with them and try to get the ball rolling. I hate having a product and not having the intended audience utilizing it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm really, really, really hoping to win either week 3 or the grand prize. Did I say really, really, really - I meant really, really, really, really, really!!!

The pre-flight checker has a nice look. The cool "wait for it" animation and a ticket of the number of checks remaining along with a progress bar.

I'd love to say Spirograph - it feeds the introvert in me, BUT, Nerf Blasters are used universally within the IT community.

You can actually just send them the url after your build the page.

I don't currently do a lot of this type of work with our installation, but when I do I post a question on Thwack. The results from the community are quick and accurate. However, I really am looking forward to learning more of this so that I can build and/or customize more on my own.

Good reminders of what most of us already know, but we must constantly be checking ourselves to ensure that we are taking these steps.

Agreed, this industry is great about coming up with acronyms and then later defining them. The terms we use are often made up with one intention and then morph over the years to become what they eventually mean. Another good reason not to jump on the latest thing when it first arrives. I've seen too many victims that have…

Good article - organization, organization, organization.
