Agreed. Let me also add that cultivating a culture of accountability, without fear, is also very important. I've seen a couple of real examples. 1) a user, under a "controlling" manager got a virus that did quite a bit of damage. Feeling like "I might get in trouble." They tried to ignore it and hope that it wouldn't come…

While the Russian hacker story reveals some critical facts it seems to me that sometimes these articles serve the opposite effect than desired. The term Russian hackers sometimes makes people think that it's about the big fish. While there are hackers dedicated to certain organizations, there are so many hacking just…

I'm not a SQL guy for for a chance to go back to Germany I could pretend. Sounds like a nice trip. And you have included some interesting articles.

Nice to have a new mission, but with the clear "throwback" look surely we can discuss our favorite 70's / 80's shows, hair styles, clothes, etc. Come on, get the chatter going.

Ewww pretty.

Maybe even tying that into a node property (existing or custom) so that you could sort and select on it and get visual results. Maybe a generic "this is what a BadaBing 7315 switch looks like" and a specific pic for each device. That would facilitate working with off site help. I worked for an organization that had offsite…

I've looked at GNS3 and really like the idea and concept. We aren't a Cisco shop so it doesn't help a lot, but I will be keeping an eye on what product lines they add for a possible future investment.

Air drop Alexa's to all the enemies. Set it to repeat back everything you say, or set to ask why every time you say anything (like kids do) It'll drive them nuts and they will willingly surrender.

We've all been there no need to self-loath - in this world there are plenty of outsiders that will do that for you.

I worked for a company that installed gate systems for parking garages (among other things). I sold a project in Orlando one time where we had a penalty/bonus assigned to the contract. For every day we missed the deadline we lost $1000, but if we were ahead of deadline we received an additional $500 for everyday ahead of…

More than once I've answered too quickly and those red x's are very disappointing, but it's part of it. Today's answer is there and looking carefully one can see that there is clearly a best answer.

When the question uses ing the answer shouldn't be ion - just saying. Missed a question because of that. (sad face)

I've attended many and they have all been fun and valuable

No, but we have some VNX (I think that's what Jon said)

Yes, initially a good troubleshooting tool. I'm looking forward to later updates that would allow us to build continuous monitors for critical systems.

This applies across the board with IT. Not to start a fight, but generally speaking privatization is what creates efficiency. Smaller government.

Thank you, you are so helpful.

Very good basic items here. I'd be interested in your perspective on what the best practices are.

The training and the Thwack community are the biggest positives for SolarWinds - I recommend the training all the time.

Yup, I saw that the second that it was announced that we were using virtual machines. For some reason (probably our own fault) people get the impression that virtual means free. And while certain aspects are "free" the maintenance an upkeep certainly are not free. How many times have I heard that dreaded phrase "Just spin…

Be sure to post a photo of yourself - at the office - in your snuggie and socks

They get a lot of cost savings by being smart, not just "cheap." I.e Instead of a custom bottle for windshield washer fluid there is a holder for a standard fluid bottle (what you buy it in) and a hose that screws on the top of the bottle. Instead of 2 doors there is one.

In IT managing and mitigating scope creep is critical. * Research thoroughly - so often scope creep comes because new information comes to light as the project proceeds * Parameters - guidelines before starting the project - fences if you will * Joint decisions - bring in all of the people affected - management, IT, legal,…

Good information. I've taken to using 2FA for my personal accounts - email/Amazon/etc. Like many I don't feel like I have a lot that people would want to steal specifically, but the whole identity theft thing is a big concern.

Everyone ultimately bears some responsibility as to what the put on their, or their companies network. However, so much of this category is marketed to people with no technology background at all. Manufactures should understand their market and build accordingly.

All very good points. I've been doing this a long time and in my early days I spent way too much time thinking I could get everything done so I'd work long hours, come home and work more. I've learned that there is always more to do and there is always tomorrow. So that community (Thank you Thwack) and the taking a break…

Agreed DanielleH "toys like this" and those pretty cool Lego themed kits might be good prizes.
