DPA is a very helpful tool. I just wish our DBAs used it more. Thanks for the new information.

I installed the v12 RC last night along with the additional poller, SRM 6.3 and it's poller. Everything went very smoothly (as usual) and looks great. I'm really excited to see how NetPath works out. We support our local network and provide "transport" to 3rd party applications and we are the first to get a call when the…

Good article and rschroeder added a lot. Automation is what computers is about isn't it. We're just not used to automating certain tasks and elements which is what makes this seem new and improved. We are living in exciting times just as long as the underlying fiber remains true to what is good and not just what is…

Agreed on the training front. When I worked for the State of Florida I worked for an agency that had a main office and 12 "area" offices. I was in one of the area offices and provided IT support to 250 or so individuals. I had a "policy" that if I got the same or very similar requests 3 times in a couple of weeks that I…

One advantage to the agent (specifically for Solarwinds) is that the amount of data passing across the network is smaller due to there being less "hand shaking" and the fact that the agent does some compression before pushing the data to the server. Another advantage of the Solarwinds agents is the ability to quickly and…

Monitoring and training are keys to any business entity. Both tend to get ignored way too much. Monitoring is often built in a reactive way - Oops, why didn't we see that, better add it to the monitoring. It takes time to properly build a monitoring system and insight into what and why you might need information in the…

I've installed the new Beta and can't add servers. I get to the page to add SAM applications and get: There was no response from the SAM Service Engine located at "".

The closest I've come is the "Reboot in" command on some network appliances. You probably already know about this, but if you don't it will reboot the device in a set amount of time thus returning to the last working configuration. I had a case where I could have used it but didn't. We had a network problem late in the…

I agree, it really is about forensics at this point. Most SIEMs will tell you that they can detect and respond, but most are looking at data on a polling time frame rather than live. The one that we use polls servers every 30 minutes so a Ton of damage can be done before it actually can do anything about it. My biggest…

Machine learning - not sure if it's cool or scary.

Agreed One of the "catch 22" that is so common in IT across the board is the matter of having time. It takes time to develop good change management - even with the right tools - as there are scripting/coding/whateveryouwannacallit. So you feel like you don't have the time to do your job and develop the tool. Of course once…

This is an interesting area. Lot's of monitoring is about a "thing" is it up or down, is it fast or slow. But with Application performance there are a multitude of "pieces" along the way and they all play a part - not only do they play a part, but each of them can affect other elements.

Congratulations to this month's winners: mdamico, alex.west, jimspencer, einsteinqrockefeller, and sisentner.

Nice description of the whole container thing. But, with everything going mobile - if you have one open in your car can you be arrested in the states with "open container laws?"
-
Thank you wabbott I don't know about the rest of the community, but I was starting to get withdraw symptoms having finished both of the December missions . . .
-
We have a secondary polling engine, but haven't found the need for HA or additional web servers yet. I'm still trying to get others on the team excited about the products so hopefully usage will grow.

Thought provoking article. With more data comes more management.
-
We use Aruba wireless and all of the AP information comes through the controller. It would be great if that individual AP information could come to Solarwinds so that we could look at all the APs from our preferred tool.

Before I started working with this customer the number was probably closer to the 75%. They were using very simple text only alerts and not purging very well. There were things monitored that didn't need to be and people just ignored the Ugly, and overly abundant alerts. I've created useful, attractive html alerts and…

Software defined is certainly a common buzz word. I'm excited to learn more of this and see it in action.

Very good article and group discussion here. Backup has come a long way. I did spend some time with a SolarWinds engineer discussing their new cloud backup solution and it looks good. I have been around long enough to know that IT always cycles and there is a big move to "cloud" so I'm just wondering how long it will be…

I really appreciate this portion Automate and Virtualize Security to Proactively Respond to Threats In it's simplest form I remember when a company I worked for moved from IDS (Intrusion Detection) to IPS (Intrusion Prevention). That one step saved us a ton of effort. And yes there will be occasional "false" positives, but…

Glad to support SolarWinds and NPM. Several of the products listed were unfamiliar to me however.

When I think of the spectrum of services it reminds me of how often IT seems to be separate from growth decisions. So often the decision to add a service, or change an offering IT is considered as just an expense. There are a variety of industries represented here at Thwack and I would challenge each of us to step out of…

Wow, very useful information. One of my bosses is always touting powershell. In fact anytime, anyone ask an odd question or comments about something the mantra around the office is "There's a script for that."
-
Monitor, monitor, monitor - there is so much wide open in so many of these devices. If you are going to use them be prepared to become a helicopter parent to each of them.

Ahh, the memories . . . One of the biggest issues for me (I'm cheap) is when I have to tote out a piece of equipment that is now obsolete and it cost many, many thousands of dollars and now is only fit for the scrap heap. My heart breaks a little. I just wish it could be re-purposed in some way. But, that's the price of…

I've been through may audits and most of them start with a list of "what if" questions. From there we determine the likelihood of issues that may arise and determine how much time and resources to put into mitigating such a risk. If, for example, your facility has a single DSL connection into the building, you might want…
