Some people move to the cloud because it is the latest Buzzword or cool thing - So were rat tails and bell bottoms Some move to the cloud because everyone else is doing it - what could possibly go wrong with that logic Some move to the cloud because it's cheaper - well not always and not for everyone Some move because…

I agree with your parallels to EV's. The biggest thing, in my mind, is to determine your plan carefully with an open mind. Don't go in with a "we have to do" or "we have always done" attitude. You may be late to the cloud game for your company, or just in time for your company or maybe not ready (or not ever) but the only…

I'd never thought of it this way, but it's something we deal with all the time. Having methods certainly increases the opportunity to do things "right." Thanks for the post.

Under resources there's the Contest and Missions. Occasionally there will be "special" things that have specific links and those are communicated either in the emails or blogs.

Regardless of the IT department size there's always the "excuse" that we are too busy. While there is truth in that I think the problem is less one of resources and more one of priority. It reminds me of a book I read back in college - "The Tyranny of the Urgent." Basically it addresses how we get trapped into dealing with…

I remember the days where you only installed a patch if it was completely necessary and fixed things in your environment - even then you hoped it wouldn't break things. Now it has flipped and patches should be installed as soon as possible to keep out the baddies. Yes, sometimes things still break, but when you consider…

Nice we are using DPA here, maybe this will get the DBAs excited.

I'm going to have to "tinker" with this a bit more. Thanks for posting.

The biggest push back I've had to face is reluctance to change. We've always done it that way, or I'm comfortable with.To me either excuse is totally invalid in any situation. I believe in every situation we should be willing to investigate and try new ways and methods. Maybe we end up with the way we've always done it,…

adatole is your job all fun and games or is that just our perception? Have fun!

People often complain about all the "red-tape" but as a consultant I find that many, many organizations don't know what they have or how it's actually configured/connected. Many times the money that is saved by not doing all the "extra work" associated with paperwork, could actually save in the long run. Many times I've…

Nice new updates to an already great product. Thanks for keeping the improvements coming.

I'm on the network side of the house, but attending this session was valuable - as always.

Yes, earlier this week I was somewhere around 123 and today I'm 170. (Rank not age - even though age does feel about right sometimes.)

PowerShell seems to be the wave of the future in the Microsoft world (OK, it's been around quite a while, but some are still gathering to it) and in this case they use their own product a lot. Many, many functions in the newer O/Ss are implemented via PowerShell scripting. I got into the hardware side of things to avoid…

I've done a handful of things this morning and points haven't accumulated for any of them. I've seen this in the past and generally the points appear later in the day, but usually it hasn't been a very long time.

Very good information. So often we monitor but forget the alerting/responding. "I'm a security MONITOR" - YouTube

My first data center had a raised floor. We ran all of the cable and power under there. Worked great for a couple of years. Then I learned - the floor can never be raised too much (cable sprawl) and you should run power and data separately, one over the top and one under the floor.

Well said - waving from the sidewalk across the street.

Agreed. Management always says that their most important asset is their people. It's good to see that they lived it out for you.
-
Interesting analogy, but very apropos for monitoring professionals.

I like that comment about it not being a single person job. If only management could understand before making a decision what the resources would require. So often it's sold as "easy and quick" without the truth of what it will really take to get there. Sometimes it only requires multiple people for a short period of time…

Bolton's note Great example of simple "security." I wonder how often we (the big general we as in everyone, etc.) give away information, queues, keys, secrets, etc. in very obvious ways, i.e. talking on the phone and responding to the question such as what's your social security number, phone number, credit card number. Or…

Yes and the other guy in town is only a bit cheaper and his work is considerably less reliable - as in sometimes things aren't labeled, sometimes they are and sometimes the labels even match the wiring. One time we use "the other guy" and asked for shielded cable - which he ran, but none of the connectors on the ends were…

Enjoyed ThwackCamp 2018. I'm in a new position and learning a lot. Next week I'll be building out a SolarWinds installation for a customer of ours.
-
I'll be there, but I suspect that this information will be valuable for builds at all levels. IT always grows and seldom, if ever, shrinks - so building with growth in mind is always a best practice.

DR and BC are difficult to pin down and the worst part is that it never is complete. It has to be a "living" document to stay current with the changes day to day.
