People indeed make leadership difficult at times. But that's the difference between management and leadership. A good leader leads by example, empathy and caring. A manager is a "cat herder." cowboys herding cats - YouTube

Very nice write up! Enlightening.

Seems odd to still see this one floating around.

NPM is my go to for most things.

Another to add to the list. I noticed the mis-spellings and was very careful before choosing an answer - red x. Hmm

The crystal Tardis would be cool - but then the figurine set would be even cooler.

Weather channel app tracking users - really, is this news (sarcasm intended) it seems that everything is now tracking us, especially with our smart phones, bluetooth in cars, smart devices, etc. and etc. It's funny, I remember years ago hearing messages about the "end times" and the question was always "How will they get…

Awesome change of pace question today. Thanks for adding in humor on such a frequent basis wabbott

Two Compelent devices. We have a couple of different devices, but my "storage guy" is yet to get me log ins to them, so they aren't even monitored yet in our production installation.

Everything we do is automated to some extent, the real question is do we embrace the discovery and implementation beyond the day to day. What I mean to use SolarWinds as an example: SolarWinds is an automated tool that polls, inspects and reports on the devices in our network, so the information that we are receiving has…

Analytics and monitoring - used to be considered separate, but are becoming more and more integrated. And of course more and more integrated into the networks that we support.

Interesting articles this time. I especially like the customer satisfaction buttons. While it doesn't give whys, it is an easy quick way to get an overall feel.

I remember those - and the Double density floppy and the 8" floppy. Fortunately I never had to do punch cards or the old "flip switch programming" But I do remember the days of having a stack of 50 3.5" floppies to back up a machine and then needing 3 sets just in case one of them failed - ehh, 50 disks, what could go…

Nice article. Finding the root cause is critical to understanding, diagnosing and preventing future issues.

As with all thing use with balance and always trust but verify!

This has been a rough month for so many. Rrrrr.

I rebooted both my primary server and second poller and now the path looks like this: I uploaded a debug from this one in case it gives some clues.

I really enjoy this "series" very interesting articles. I love the fact that Thwack is not just about SolarWinds and related products, but Thwack is a community of IT professionals seeking to improve the work lives of other IT professionals.

Very good article. I really like the perspective on asking questions. I'm motivated to do a good job and I tend to learn from that angle. Asking good questions adds a new perspective and will certainly increase my value as an IT person and as a person in general. Thanks Leon.

A friend of mine works at a church. They were having a funeral on a Saturday during the hot months of the year. The body was delivered on Thursday and having automated HVAC the only room that had cooling 24X7 . . . You guessed it for a couple of days no one really wanted to go into the data center.

That's got to be one of the biggest pain points in the whole of IT.

Congrats dc4networks and knucklebusted

This is a great space to be in. It seems that O365 is growing leaps and bounds and many feel out of control when everything goes into the cloud. It's good to have additional security options.

Very good. Even the best of us get over provisioned and miss steps or portions time to time. I love checklists to help me avoid missing things.

Good insight and questions that generally only come up AFTER the contract is signed or after the first big issue.

Of all the steps outlined the last one that is often the most neglected. I'm big on documentation - it's like insurance, you hope it's a waste of time and that you never need it, but in a disaster . . .

I was out of town on Friday and almost missed out. I've done that in the past and it feels awful. (One time I logged in from my phone - it was painful, but I didn't miss the questions or points - and of course that feeling of accomplishment when you finish the entire mission)

This will be helpful once we fully implement VOIP

The all new politically correct Daleks. Ahh, so cute.

Ah the common debate - specialty or "jack of all trades?" At least from a monitoring stand point having visibility into all of the "stack" allows us to find the area where the problem lies - or just find areas for improvement, it's not just about break fix. The pro-active approach is always better for the end users.
