Nice mix of articles. I hope the Thwack team is listening as I'm pretty sure we'd all like to win the breakfast machine.

Same here, not getting a green check

Nice a lot of new functionality. I will be installing next week - just completed my change request.

Very good article. Thanks for the post and the article you referenced.

Our team works together really well when it comes to finding the root cause of issues. Of late, however, we have been experiencing friction between a handful of the team members getting frustrated because things weren't being done "their way." The most vocal one is the kind if guy that just wants to "get it done." In fact…

Service ticket beer-pong could make the day better - or at least different. (get management buy in first)

We have a SIEM that was purchased by an earlier admin that loved PowerShell, and all things scripting. That said the tool that he purchased is very powerful and will do a lot - if you are of that mindset. I am not, nor is anyone else on my team. Therefore this product is a very expensive tool to notify us of changes to our…

These articles highlight how much information is out there and the double edged sword that it is.

Oh, I'm ok with it now - neither of my kids have kids yet, but I'd be ok with it. I was just commenting about your grandfather having the machine I started with when I was an adult already. (Guess it just hit a bit to close to home)

I'm one of those IT guys that has come to actually like documentation, spreadsheets, checklists, Visio diagrams - so I end up doing most of it within the team. To me it's like insurance, you hope you never need it, but if you do you're glad you have it. That said one of the most difficult pieces of KBs is writing it in a…

I agree I've been in IT for a very long time and it's so easy to blame the consumer or end user, but they shouldn't be expected to have the knowledge of the professional. I support a hospital so when I go to the doctor the first thing that I check is NOT his level of technical abilities. He should know his profession and I…

Appropriate post as we are looking at taking this direction. Currently we send syslog to SolarWinds and to our SIEM. This is a better practice.

Congrats lilgav

Wendy, thanks for the humor that you put into this months answers. It makes it more fun. You do a great job with these each month.

Seems Perfstack is causing a flutter. Looking forward to today's "training" Your comment about data over time is important. So often in monitoring people focus on the now, but without a picture of how things are changing you will always end up reacting.

Lot's of good information here - both in the article and the discussion. I am curious as to how everyone is storing all that information. Are you using standard SANs, NAS etc. or have you gone the way of the massive jbod boxes like all of the big boys use - ie. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc.

Congrats ghenry

Congrats jdawger765 - learning makes this valuable, winning makes it fun!

There are many parts to a good employee and certifications are certainly one aspect. A big part of the question (assuming you are doing it for a current job) is how much weight does your employer give to the various aspects - i.e. actual skill, experience, personality, teach ability, certifications, willingness to step…

Yes, lessons to be learned for all of us. I for one appreciate Amazon's willingness to admit and even document these mistakes. Most of the larger companies would have just beheaded the offending employee and called it a day. (Not literally of course)

There's so much to this issue. Of recent I've been using the phrase "That's a management issue." Basically because we've had a couple of things that team mates have done or not done that irritated others on the team. Being a management issue isn't a cop out, but rather a way to calm yourself when frustration arises. Good…

While I wouldn't take my bracket skills very far, I really do enjoy the interactions.

"fake news" bothers me less than the obvious bias. We've always had fake news, ala the National Enquirer. You can usually determine if something is real or fake with a little research and reasoning - admittedly it's getting harder. But the media wields so much power that when they speak for a "side" rather than just…

Nice mission overall. I enjoy the variety.

Not going to mention brand names, but there are many in the medical field that not only keep the default passwords, but publish them in their readily available (read, find it on the internet) documentation. The reasoning seems to be that "someone would have to be on your internal network to get to the devices." Really,…

I worked for state IT for a while and as things do the naming was changing. At that time we were called Information Services or IS. We were then changing to Information Technology. Ideas floated such as: State Health Information Technologies Health Information Technologies & Management Information Services

Congrats rhether Guess I'll have to buy my own remote.

I really appreciate these word a day challenges, they inspire my writing, increase camaraderie amongst the Thwack community. It's great that SolarWinds seeks to bring out the best in the community members, not just in our IT roles, but in our lives. Companies often talk about how important people are, but things like this…

I'd like to say more, but Yum kind of sums it up.
