I like that phrase "databases are tricky little devils", and I'm going to use that this Halloween somehow.

You don't toss them out until you are done with them.

Thanks! Glad you enjoy them.

Yeah, a few months ago I heard about someone discussing the use of Blockchain in the fast food industry, to ensure the quality of food, or to track the source of contaminated food. Anything supply-chain related is a use case for Blockchain. Unfortunately, the Blockchain tech is still so new and slow it isn't as practical…

Good topic for discussion here. I've usually only thought about time zones in the standard way, and only as a result of having to deal with people that cannot think in UTC. But for the years I was a production DBA in financial services...the concept of time zones certainly rings true. Each department operated at slightly…

Thank you, Happy Christmas to you as well.

It was a beautiful snow. Just hard enough for the effect as we opened gifts, then stopped in time for us to clear the driveway for our guests while the roast beast was cooking. And then the sun came out, clearing the snow from the blacktop so our guests wouldn't slip. Magic.

There's no end to the Pi Day jokes, apparently.

I believe it is called RasherCoin there.

True story: I used to work for a company that did warehouse management software. The idea of drones seems like a good one, but I'm not sure how well that would work. Warehouses have a lot of activity, and I could see the drones being involved in a lot of accidents. I think OSHA would have a few things to say on the matter,…

From what I have read and seen, the cars are far more aware of the environment around them and are safer as a result.

Yeah, I know many a fanbois who don't like being reminded that their software isn't secure, or stable, or usable, or...

Thanks. I'll be hanging around here a bit more, I'm looking to have a regular column starting next week. I'm going to call it 'The Actuator'.

Yes, having recurring meetings is crucial for opening lines of communication and building trust. In my book I talked a bit about "never eat alone", where you would go out of your way to have lunch with a coworker in an effort to develop a healthy working relationship.

Nah, I can imagine a show where a lawyer is teamed up with a robot and they are out fighting crime.

Oh! That reminds me...I need to add a new one there.

The issue with NPS is a human one. When we know the metric we are looking to achieve, we will game the system in order to get the highest score. Sometimes we do this on purpose, but sometimes it can be sub-conscious. I recall part of Six Sigma training talked about this aspect when designing experiments. You don't want the…

I want to like this 199 times. #FreeBrady

Agreed, I don't see it as anything other than a scam. Right now my sense is that the people who tried to get in are doing their best to recover their losses from trying to generate BTC. The only way to do that is to find ways to hyperinflate the price so that they can cash out, quickly.

It's my real Lego daughter. My daughter always asks if she can travel with me and I'm always saying no. So one day she came into my office and gave me the minifig and said "you can take her instead", and I started taking pictures of all the places and events we were visiting.

Oh my, those are wonderful additions, thanks!

Yessir. It's funny to think about how I first learned about snapshots. The server team was showing me how easy it was for them to take a snapshot and use it as a restore point. Nobody ever thought to ask about the performance implications until we found them later. And I never thought about them when I saw the error…

As an experienced traveler, I know to always have a towel. I won't need it for crying, however, as I expect to remain undefeated.

I bet someone could write a PowerShell script to do just that.

Welcome!

Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback! Just wondering if you have seen DPA for your database offering.

I believe I found that place on my way to Colorado Springs.
