  • There is a debate going on right now in our area between many of the medical systems about Office 365. Most want to move to it, but the debate is how does HIPAA play into this? Most of the IT people are on the side of not compliant because the data being stored is not encrypted at all, among other things. Business is on…
  • Every time I see a topic like this I keep coming back to this story I read on CNN recently. Your car's data may soon be more valuable than the car itself - Feb. 7, 2017 It is a good read and brings up some interesting questions. Imagine a city full of smart cars full of censors always on and scanning. Things like traffic…
  • I have to many to even mention. We just moved into our brand new hospital building 8 weeks ago. I think my funniest nightmare was probably right at the start during the planning phase when they had a big meeting with all the managers and management and a few other key people to go over the floor plans and designs. When it…
  • Boy it just keeps getting better and better over and Equifu**s HQ. Equifax’s Latest Data Breach: Argentina - DataBreachToday Default admin credentials for an employee portal with faxes and other data. Clear text uersnames and passwords being stored in there as well for staff. Brilliant, just brilliant. I think they are…
  • The first 2 links go to the same story about the IoT device. We should start a "Save the Screen Saver" campaign!!! I remember the brick wall maze one. I used to sit there and try to draw out the maze on graph paper to see if it was just randomly generating a tunnel or an actual maze. I don't remember if i ever found out.…
  • "the last thing you want is to find that you have little bandwidth available for data traffic because everyone in the office is playing Pokemon " But all those Lugia are not going to just hop in my poke-balls on their own!!!
  • adatole When you said "For almost a decade now, I've disconnected every single week, rain or shine, regardless of my job title, company, or on-call rotation." that really caught my attention. Mostly the on-call rotation part of it. You must have been at employers where they are flexible in how they assign the call…
  • I wonder just how much vizio made selling all that data. I think that the consumers whos data was sold should be given a chunk of that profit. Will be curious to see how this plays out over the next few years as "big data" becomes even bigger and more profitable. I just read a story last week, sorry dont have the link,…
  • Our HR department went and did this exact thing about a year ago. They went and found this "Cloud System" that had all their HR stuff integrated into it. Another "Awesome Feature" is that it could replace our payroll system. So without IT knowledge or guidance, they went and signed the contract for it. They also did not…
  • I have to say that one of the most prevailing trends I see throughout this thread is this. Most everyone who has been in IT for a while started out in one area, and then moved to another area of IT. Then there are other people who didn't start out in IT and they moved into it from something else. I guess the big takeaway…
  • Chief Break Room Stock Manager.
  • Well that just made me hungry....
  • We have not really had to do anything special in the last few years to deal with cyber monday issues. Being in healthcare that time-period is usually pretty slow for us anyway. No one wants to be layed up for the holidays so they generally don't schedule procedures around that time. We do have our web filters setup to…
  • "The top reason given for bringing applications and infrastructure back on-premises was security and compliance (28%), followed by poor performance (21%)." This says a lot to me. This means that everyone touting the "increased performance" and "effortless state of the art security and compliance" really are not able to…
  • One of my favorite scenes from this movie!!!!
  • Guessing part of the requirement is full hard drive encryption, which is built right into windows 10 through bit locker. If you dont have the right creds or keyfob to unlock it, it wont even boot up past POST. I have seen it in practice a little bit, it is fairly impressive. Can make support an incredible nightmare though…
  • The last election cycle would make a good setup for how ISP's could have massive influence on elections just by controlling the speed and flow of data. Imagine Time Warner knowing Trump to be very business friendly, and Clinton being not so much. So Time Warner wants Trump to win, they donate to his campaign. Then they go…
  • The lack of standardization is both a blessing and a curse in this aspect. It is good, because it allows freedom for creativity and expansion without having to go through miles of red tape just to get your slice of the pie. On the other hand, it creates a nightmare in documentation and knowing what is what. As you said…
  • Is it bad that I am secretly hoping some politicians and people like that get their identities stolen and taken to the cleaners on their credit as a result of this? Maybe if some of the people who actually have some power get burned because of this, then equifax might actually be held accountable for what they did here.
  • Working in IT in a hospital is like an acronym and terminology competition at times. I have been in a few meetings and when I got done I asked what happened, and if the meeting was not done in English because I understood next to nothing that happened.
  • It is very funny that you mention Tech Writers. I actually picked up this habit and mentality in a Technical Report Writing class I had to take in college once. The class was literally 18 weeks of being given assignments to write reports and instructions on technical stuff. I absolutely hated the class while I was taking…
  • Are there any sacrifices involved with it? I don't have many chickens to spare right now. I have herd the same thing from a few other people who went with Hybrid Exchange on prem and O365 in the cloud. They said that setup for new users can be a nightmare, but once its done its all gravy after that.
  • First time in a few months I have managed a clean sweep!
  • For cloud I would assume it is the vendors responsibility to maintain backups for the data stored on it. In the end I would look closely at what the contract says about it with the vendor.
  • I had to edit it twice to get it right because auto correct kept fixing it on me lol. Poke poke poke poke poke
  • The cpu cache thing is kind of crazy. It just goes to show that you need to be very careful of where you are hosting your data and where you process it. It's amazing what people can think of with enough free time!
  • My two biggest hangups with certifications right now are the following: First is I suck at taking tests. I have horrible instant memory recollection ability. Unless it is something I literally do every day, or something that just happened in the last day I have problems recalling it instantly. This has always been an issue…
  • I feel it sets a pretty slippery slope set of events if one ISP starts charging someone like Netflix because a lot of the traffic on their network is from a company. If comcast decides to charge netflix, who is already paying for their internet connections, to deliver content to their customers, how does that work in rural…
  • The only thing that really changes with all of this is who the server admin gets their paycheck from. VM's on prem and in the cloud still have to run on a physical server somewhere. All you are doing is condensing your power and workloads from a lot of physical space to a much smaller space. Until they are able to create a…
