  • Okay, I take it that it's a "no" from SolarWinds? If so, that's a shame. Yesterday I upgraded a WhatsUp Gold installation from v11 to v12, and it's now got some pretty cool features like Split Second Graphs -- hover the mouse over, say, a bandwidth utilisation metric and a pop-up graph appears showing realtime bandwidth…
  • Hi Chris Sorry for not being clear. I was actually meaning system uptime as in sysUpTime. Since the Device Details web resource already includes SNMP system values like name, description, location and contact, I was thinking that it should also display sysUpTime. Admittedly it would have to be fetched in realtime unlike…
  • Hi Peter Alert A contains all devices and has two actions: an Auto Report Email for failure/recovery messages and a Simple Email for information messages. This works really well and provides an instant snapshot of performance metrics via email when a monitor exceeds thresholds or goes down, rather than having to go find it…
  • Yeah, I've seen this too. Seems to come and go. Not too serious but slightly frustrating. I'll try to take a closer look to when it next comes up. My gut feel is that it's more of an IPM client/server glitch than a service restarting. Rgds, Simon
  • The change to the default monitor names (dropping device name) appears like a good move. It certainly makes them easier to read. When I originally set up our system I included device name at the front of each monitor name, but now that a device name column appears alongside the monitor name column in the "Monitor states…
  • Thanks SolarWinds for the license upgrade. Very generous. Now I'll need to find more things to monitor(!) Now I know why our recent maintenance renewal was cheaper than expected. I didn't want to query it in case it was a mistake ;-) The 9.0.5 download was available for me when I checked earlier. I installed it and…
  • Here's how to do it: * Copy the Popup XML text and paste into an editor. * Make your FQDN change. * Copy all the text in your editor. * In IPM, go Configuration > System Settings > Import Settings. * Change 'Data Source' to 'Cut and Paste XML'. * Paste your modified XML text into the 'XML Text' box. * Click Import. HTH
  • Hi Chris This would be a useful feature, but I recommend that it be implemented as optional. That is, when you do a scan you should be able to specify whether you want ipMonitor to use the interface name or the alias as the monitor name. Then each customer can choose which naming convention works best for them. You were…
  • I use Opera on Windows Mobile 6.1. Colleagues of mine use Blackberries and iPhones (Safari). For your reference, WUG 12.4 supports Mobile Safari v2.2, Internet Explorer Mobile v6.1 and Opera Mini v4.2.
  • Check out this thread for how to negate regexes in IPM. Also there's a great utility mentioned (Expresso) for building regexes. Thanks to Peter Cooper for both of these. HTH Rgds, Simon
  • Received this response from the SolarWinds support team: We have discovered an issue with smart groups and tagging. This should be resolved in the next release. You will be notified when the release is available.
  • You're not alone. I have a case logged for New Zealand daylight saving time changes that were brought in over 12 months ago. I logged the call in March and I was advised that a 'bug' has been opened with the development team but have heard nothing since. They also won't reply to my emails. Talk about unprofessional. Here's…
  • Hi Chris Thanks for your reply. The problem I'm encountering is that I only want to include router/server ping monitors, eg, (device type = router OR server) AND monitor type = ping. With the way the SmartGroup logic works, when I add 'device type = router|server', I get all the monitors for these devices so I then need to…
  • Also hop on the ipMonitor machine and try telneting to your SMTP server on port 25. This article gives some good tips for manually testing SMTP connectivity. Rgds, Simon
  • Hi Peter Thanks for your help. Turned out to be a classic case of Catch 22. The reason we didn't get any email alerts is because the monitor that was down was our email system(!) Time to configure up some more alerts on our new GSM modem. Rgds, Simon
  • Hi Peter Thanks for checking the code. Our ERP's web services are taken down at 9pm on the last day of the month for month end processing, so I want to create a maintenance schedule to suppress alerts. Can you please submit this as a new feature request? Thanks - Simon
  • Hi Peter I tried your suggestion of deleting the previously scanned server and adding it as a new device using it's IP address. This worked fine and offered up a bunch of monitors to add (ping, pop3, smtp, ftp, http). Do you have any idea why ipMonitor will scan one way but not the other? Thanks - Simon
  • Thanks for your replies, Chris and Peter. I'm out of the office for a few days but I'll try your suggestions on my return.
  • Hi Peter Thanks for your reply. Excellent as always. I've used mass edit to drop the number of failures on the dependencies from 3 to 2. Sounds like that should do the trick. Look forward to seeing what might come out of the feature request. Rgds, Simon
  • We're still in the planning stage, but we look like we'll do a dual-stack implementation, eg. run IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously on each device, until IPv4 goes away. We're just waiting on a software release for our core switch to enable IPv6 routing and then we'll get underway. Can't give you a date just yet, but I hope it…
  • Hi Christine Great to see these new features being worked on. Please also don't forget to fix the old bugs, some of which have been around for several years: * Case 30707: Hour Reports don't revert to current data (ie. last 60 minutes and last 24 hours) after previously viewing custom time/date ranges. * Case 37503:…
  • Hi aparadis We're using a MultiTech MTCBA-G-F1 with no problems. Had some issues getting it going but the legendary Peter Cooper helped me with that here. HTH Rgds, Simon
  • Message to the SolarWinds guys: It appears that no one in the user community has tried this modem. The "recommended" modems list I've seen from SolarWinds includes either handsets (which we don't want) or end-of-life modems. Can I please ask that SolarWinds provides an up-to-date recommended modems list using currently…
  • I had the same problem when I first installed ipMonitor. However it helped me realise that I didn't want to be reliant on DNS to monitor our infrastructure, ie. I still wanted to monitor everything even if our DNS server went down. So I switched to using IP addresses. It's a pain to change new monitors to using IP…
  • Another way to use SmartGroups for alerts is to use tags. Tag each monitor/device with whatever tag you want to use (we use "importance=Critical") then create a SmartGroup that includes only the monitors/devices with that tag. Your SmartGroup then only uses one expression instead of 25 and should be a lot more efficient.…
  • Hi elemzy Here's how I'm monitoring processes on Ubuntu servers: - Edit /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf and add a 'proc NAME' entry, where NAME is the name of the process you want to monitor as returned by a 'ps -e' command. - Restart your snmpd daemon: /etc/init.d/snmpd restart - In ipMonitor, navigate to your Unix server, add a new…
  • As Elizabeth correctly mentions, you need to use the ipMonitor MIB builder but there is a gotcha (see below). Go to the SolarWinds Customer Portal and login using your SolarWinds customer ID and password. In the left-hand panel click 'ipMonitor MIB Builder' which will then prompt you for your ipMonitor account name and…
  • SolarWinds removed the licensing restrictions in v9.0.5 -- you can now have an unlimited number of monitors. Suggest you upgrade to a later version. Rgds, Simon
  • Yes, we're doing this no problem using ipMonitor 9 and no additional MIBs. If you have SNMP correctly configured on your AS/400s, ipMonitor should scan it fine and suggest SmartMonitors for Bandwidth, Drive Space, Memory and Processor. Because of the AS/400's unique 'single level storage' architecture, the Memory monitors…
  • I haven't tried it myself yet, but according to this thread you can monitor one or two SNMP OIDs that give the overall health state of your server. The OIDs for HP and Dell servers are listed. If your server has any health issue, including drive failure, then your monitor will alert you. Rgds, Simon
