automated monitoring has helped a great deal, but for proper troubleshooting, you need skills. These skills are very hard to teach - you either are great at troubleshooting or you rely on a list of step by step questions which only apply to exact and defined situations and equipment...

Not that I share these with all my users, but... The issue was a PEBKAC. (problem exists between keyboard and chair) I.T.'s job is to "out-dumb" users. Meaning we have to figure out the dumbest thing a user would ever do in a certain circumstance, then put safeguards in place to prevent it.

I should have said "better communication based on light waves"... line of sight is not very helpful...and lasers can be refracted by particles such as rain, clouds, fog, etc.

Java is definitely the worst...especially when you have to deal with programmers that like to hard code specific versions (very old and outdated ones) with their application and you can't upgrade/update it without breaking the application.
