That sense of satisfaction is really important, agreed!

I can be in places where Internet and 4G voice are down or patchy and our emergency services radios are the only way to communicate. Sometimes low-tech has its place.

I like that point of view of inheriting a new set of problems. As I mentioned, Microsoft has helped address this a little with the update channels for Office 365. They have that Enterprise background that knew one software version updated every month automatically was not going to fly with business customers. I'd be…

That's on the agenda - I'll start a discussion about how this will help our IT roles, beyond the automation of chef, puppet etc. Self healing systems FTW!

You'll probably throw a bunch of application alternatives my way, but I've always seen Windows driven by application availability. As the first widely adopted GUI operating system, the application ecosystem just grew and grew. That evened out a little with the affordability and adoption of Macs. But many of the apps I need…

You certainly have to crunch the numbers. I'm finding the challenge is that a lot of the 'savings' (eg less IT support time, improved productivity etc) don't solidly translate to numbers on the bottom line, versus the bill you get for the SaaS service which is very black and white on your bank statement. I tell people I'm…

There's that control word again. It has to be up high on the list of Top Reasons Why Not To Cloud.
-
Ooh! Highmem and EMM386 for the win!
-
This is where you need a test environment and an explorer/adventurer spirit!
-
Absolutely. That's one of the reasons I love this industry so much - it's always changing.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.

Nice work!

We all love cool stuff I think the best sys admins are ultimately driven by a desire to help others.
-
Great points. Now if we could only develop an accurate crystal ball and sell it, we'd be billionaires.
-
Thanks! I had to convert it to American. Here in Australia it's a MyFun pass for access to Movieworld, Sea world and Wet n Wild. All the best for your AAD implementation!

Yup, you know you’ve been in IT too long when you know the difference between internal & external DOS commands.
-
Maybe we need an article on what, if anything, has changed? The SaaS model certainly makes it easy and cheap for SMBs to try some Cloud products, with very low risk - whether they are pure 'via a browser' solutions on even onprem installed software with Cloud admin controls and monthly licenses. That was out of reach of…

True, it's always been a changing industry but it feels like the rate of change is insane lately. One thing I mention to people looking to take parental leave is how to stay up to date while you're out of the office. Not everybody wants to, especially if you are an employee that wants to clock off completely for family…

With an external monitor or two I think they are a decent desktop/laptop alternative.

I'm seeing the same with AI. Sometimes it's machine learning. Sometimes it's a chatbot. Often it's not true AI at all. #buzzwords

So the desktop apps you run from an Office 365 subscription are Office 365 ProPlus, which at the moment is Office 2016. But the support guys will need to watch those update cycles (branches).

Did the changing of the guard result in actual, demonstrable business benefits?

Delve will be really powerful for bigger organisations with distributed teams, helping information to not remain siloed.

They are listed under a ''Bookmarked' heading in a dropdown box, that appears when you click in the Search box.

Love it! I'd really like to see more real world examples of this. Though I did see on twitter someone posted Alexa was down and they couldn't turn their home lights off.
-
lol does that ever happen? Good luck with your workload!
-
It's totally unrealistic to say the Cloud will always be available. But the Cloud vendors will tell you that they have better availability than you do in -house, because they have spent more on infrastructure redundancy than you could ever afford. Know of any on-prem systems that have never been unavailable? You probably…

As “old school” as it was, it was still a great way to learn. Hands on. In the deep end. Don’t get me wrong – I love that I can watch a Microsoft Virtual Academy course in my own time, but learning by doing is what really cements your knowledge. And from the conversation we had two weeks ago, most people struggle to find…

OK that's awesome! There's a ton of manual jobs out there that our users do that could be automated. Some clients I've heard of (not mine) still get staff to hand in written timesheets that they do data entry for in the payroll system, or multiple excel spreadsheets they need to. But I also like the concept of allowing…
