I really like the irony there.

It's possible Elon Musk hasn't caused unhappiness for folks who love science fiction, and for those who design and build rockets and satellites. Although if the Internet is to be believed, one would expect even his most ardent fans to not like at least some of his actions. If his plans and hopes and dreams are beneficial…

I've requested similar ideas in the past, and this one's a good one. Throw in the ability to look back through a data warehouse for Internet or specific WAN port utilization across five or ten years, while they're at it! Then work on the compression and filtering; I'm only interested in accurate data, and specifically…

I like it. Even more so now that we're routing our own BGP internally and across custom / private wave bands we've installed to cut our WAN service costs to a just a fraction of what the commercial carriers were forcing us to pay. Let's make this be a thing.

I plan on watching this one. There's so much to learn, improve, check, test, deploy, implement . . . And then sit back and enjoy the ability to spend time on other projects, trusting and confident that SW is doing the right job for us while we secure SolarWinds the proper ways.

I see four fun people, having fun. If I HAD to say it (and I wouldn't), I might say there are two posers, one reality checker, and one cutie. And you MIGHT be wrong assuming which falls into those labels!

Top Ten IoT items missed out on one I can think of: proving the cloud is as secure as its hosters claim it is. "Sure, your data's safe with ME! As soon as the check clears, your data/services will be available." To everyone.

Just watching in-house Microsoft (and other) app performance go from sub-second to 15 seconds or more when moving to the cloud (example: Exchange), having MFA outages associated with AWS and/or Azure (which caused a slough of HD Tickets when users couldn't VPN into work), I'm seriously under-impressed with The Cloud.…

Trains? I thought this was all about what was buried in the North Dakota prairie?

Thank you for providing access to the slides!

. . . unless there's an alert or syslog message or event that is present, that is important, that you haven't properly configured to get your attention, that you haven't discovered or looked into yet . . . (there are often exceptions to unplugging's needs). Too often I see subtle or hard-to-notice issues reported to, or…

Yahoo Changes Ridding the company of "problem" staff, changing one of its internal names to Altaba, etc. These items will not bring me back to Yahoo to be constantly barraged by advertisements, and to be inundated with vulnerabilities and hacks and stolen passwords and user names. Yahoo was my go-to Search Engine long ago,…

I followed your instructions--they worked perfectly, and on the first attempt. Nicely done! Thank you for sharing. Rick Schroeder

To your list of traits, habits, and characterizations of successful job hunters, I'll add: * Smiling * Listening more than talking * Taking turns during conversation * Avoiding one-upsmanship and boasting * Keeping trust sacred * Always being truthful * Saying what's necessary, but no more ("Just the facts, Ma'am!") *…

Thanks, Connie. You've probably been with SW long enough to have seen some of my other posts, but if you liked that little bit of lyric, there are a few others you might enjoy, too: A Halloween Network Tale Here's a silly poll I created that eventually morphed into some more lyrics, further down in the comments:…

Yes, I've enjoyed his stories for a long time. Burning Chrome was a favorite, and I love the concept of Black ICE. Certainly it was a logical lead into the world of the Matrix.

That's good information. As a non-drone-operator, and one who's been annoyed by drones at outdoor events (one was actually at a shooting event, where there were hundreds of guns--making some of us wonder how long that annoying drone would last), I'm happy to have clear skies & quiet air. And freedom from Big Brother or…

One might hope or assume LEM is automatically built into NPM's syslog capabilities, but understanding logs and the alerts they can/should/shouldn't generate is a deep subject, and LEM has a place in the world that's well-earned.

Regarding the best defense against ransomware, I'll offer "prevention." Prevention by doing a better job educating kids, providing excellent examples of moral behavior and rewarding it--or quickly detecting and punishing anti-social behavior. Anything less is time less-well spent.

Thanks for sharing the article about power consumption associated with the reaction to COVID-19. Now that my wife and I have been working at home for the last few weeks, we're definitely using more electricity at home, and using less electricity at our employers' offices. How that will translate into dollars saved or spend…

I've observed I troubleshoot better when it's someone else's problem. Ironic, that. And yes, others seem to troubleshoot better when it's my problem. The main thing is working with a team, and not letting the pressure get to you. And not minding someone watching over your shoulder and offering advice--or working on the…

We're used to slow Internet performance on virtually everything, due to our location. It's nice that you have 2 ms latency to Google DNS. The latency is one part of the recipe for disappointed O365 customers here.

I'm looking forward to my organization doing training about Social Engineering as a vulnerability, including casual conversations, thumb drive scattering, and e-mail phishing tests. PHI is a concern where I work; not enough is done to ensure folks have great habits instead of being polite & accommodating, and thus letting…

Wow, I can't believe the weeks go by so quickly--this weekly update really drives it home to me. Java Ransomware? OK, it's time to unplug, shut down. I'm going fishing. Permanently. Escher would've loved that .gif! If the "Ministry of NO" image drives folks to use Shadow IT resources, much of IT's ability to protect data…

A little research shows she's in Australia, many hours ahead of me in the States. It's already December 2 for her. Nicely done, Ashley!

Save everyone some CPU cycles and call it what it is: Application Service Providers, or ASP's. It doesn't matter whether it's Internal or External, if you're talking "Cloud"--just that you and your users don't feel it's nebulous and unknowable, or that it can't be measured or monitored. If you need a service and you can't…

Possibly the best politically correct Bump gif ever.
