Thank you for creating this series and sharing it. I'm particularly interested in cases where the cloud has not proven to be cost effective or satisfying users and businesses needs--where I.T. has pulled some (or all?) cloud-based items back to local data centers, and the rationale for doing so.

IoT Security. What ARE Thwack members doing about it, both within their companies and at home? What are they recommending to family members, friends, coworkers, and employers? My sister texted me yesterday "How does Facebook have the transcript of my telephone conversation with someone else?" When I explained that…

Perhaps Waymo should take a page out of the UPS drivers' manual and avoid left turns. The article noted Waymo wasn't able to look ahead and see a traffic accident affecting the left land, and waited until too long to attempt to merge to avoid the problem. Obviously (?) if all other cars were Waymos, not only would there…

Hmmm. I went to answer Question 20 for October 29, it didn't want me to play today. Is this unique to my account, or the date/time? Are any others having this experience, too? Ricki S.

This was a lovely, thoughtful, and classy product retirement/migration announcement. I like the style a lot. Thanks, SW, for doing right by your folks, and for having good spin doctors create a positive message out of potentially bad news. Nicely done!

There's always so much to learn in this realm. Not least of which are all the new acronyms!

In Maine, eh? Bacon-wrapped Lobster?

I love to be appreciated for what I do at work. I'd love to have loads of money. I'd trade them for happy, worry-free times with my family and friends. THAT'S my definition of Heaven. I submit that Logan didn't want anything more than that.

I have to believe that stopping insider threats starts long before anyone is employed at an agency. It has to be inculcated from birth, to be trustworthy and suspicious simultaneously, and that's a conflict that could result in damaged minds and ethics at early ages. But what alternative is there? What "big picture" fix…

LastPass. Sigh. If you are using anything you can't control, please change that practice.

I have a very-successful work around for you to accomplish what you need and save you and your team the hassle of manually adding new nodes to existing jobs. Open up one of the NCM Jobs you would like automatically applied to new nodes. On the second step called "Choose Nodes", select the Dynamic Selection option. Below it…

Perhaps we think alike . . . You know what they say.

"Hard To Monitor?" It's nearly as hard to read, and that's unusual in a Thwack Blog. The text on this post is unexpectedly disjointed. I understand the content, but the presentation is distracting. Maybe the output of the text editor used doesn't reproduce accurately when viewed in Chrome? The carriage returns seem to…

Waymo. It had to happen. Some folks will get hurt, some might die. Progress will occur. Companies and cities and people will learn. The future is where we're at. We just need to understand it choose to embrace or eschew the events and items it may bring.

I spoke with an FBI agent about Ransomware at a recent Tech Day event in my town. He readily reported that companies/people who pay the ransom are the most likely to be targeted for it over and over. The concept is called "Danegeld", and it's mighty old.

A person has to REALLY be incensed to carve their complaint in stone! Thanks for sharing that one--it got great mileage from my peers.

OMG. Just Googled Arizona Valley Of The Sun Haboob. https://www.google.com/search?q=moroccan+sand+storm&safe=active&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source… I think I'll accept our mosquitos over that kind of sandstorm.

I'm lovin' all the thoughts & viewpoints & concerns listed in these comments! Where I live, DSL from one provider is the only option. I have no other vendors to choose from. Being locked in makes me aware that there is no competition, and that I can't find a better price or service. Being locked in means I'm especially…

Someone thinks combining humans and computers via Bluetooth is a GOOD THING? Did they not get the memo that Bluetooth is bad for Wifi? That it's a vector for attacks on smartphones and other devices? And now they want people connected to Bluetooth? Armis - BlueBorne Explained - YouTube

I do not trust my country's enemies because they've proven to be untrustworthy. In some cases for purely selfish reasons. In other cases for very good reasons--they've been betrayed by corporations or my government, without apology or recompense.

My jaded mind immediately went to the classic challenges of government I.T.: Funding and People. When you can't get the right funding to do the job well because someone wants lower taxes, you can't do the job well. Folks are pretty short-sighted in their needs to cut taxes, seemingly out of assumption that waste and abuse…

I just like the idea of such excellent performance tuning that it could make a difference to someone without training, who has to take over being a DBA through lack of planning by Management.

I'd love to read your comments on the difference between contracting services to ASP's versus hosting them internally. Your organization has (probably?!) already done this and determined it makes better sense for you to use ASP's. I realize the financial details aren't for the public, but could you give a general idea in…

That Capitol One hacker was reportedly a white hat. Reportedly a former Amazon employee. One doubts her white hat intent when she didn't immediately report the vulnerability to Capitol One, and when she (again, reportedly) accessed many files that would be valuable to the dark net. Probing without permission and authority…

Wow! I've grayed a lot since I became an MVP! Warning! Don't become an MVP! Guess I'll have to get a little gray spray paint for my bobble head . . .

When anyone who cares has read the risks of IoT devices and continued using them, what hope is there for the average consumer when it comes to them increasing their vulnerabilities by buying IoT devices without understanding how to secure them? It sure seems this is a great case of turning to the government for laws…

Ugh--that thing was about as bad as what Khan slipped into Chekov's ear.

All Managers & IT Directors and CIO's need to take this to heart and then provide budget to purchase the tools and the training so their staff can use the tools correctly and efficiently from Day One.

Amen to that! The movies are often guilty of misrepresenting people. Plus, the Internet is likely misrepresenting things, too.
