Uff da! I WAS overthinking it. And making assumptions, and not thinking. Reading every word and seeing which words don't make sense for this application was my ticket to a green check. I wasn't seeing what was there, only assuming intelligent and appropriate options were present. There's one word in one or more of the…

Robocalls. First off, they're illegal in my state unless very limited conditions apply (the caller is a political party, a non-profit, or a company currently doing business with you). Second, my numbers are on a "spam block" list with my state's administration. Before anyone "is allowed" to junk-call me, they're required…

Quite a few missions back, just for grins I selected the "No" option. It DID give me a red X, just as I expected.

Lots of folks at this gun show likely thought the drone would make satisfactory target practice for their skills. However, the device above brings concerns, too. I expect there'll be legislation about it, just as there's always action and reaction to anything that impacts our daily lives--particularly when it involves…

Nice sentiments--thank you! I, as well as many others (I suspect), share your feelings and observations. It's nice to be welcomed--and needed! Being able to ask questions and receive helpful answers is a major plus to the vCommunity. Providing useful answers to those with questions is the other side of the coin--it's a bit…

Sounds like a lot of computer & wireless access, Audio/Video systems, and security cameras, to me. Hopefully zero connectivity for IoT things like refrigerators, HVAC, lighting, etc., none of which have good records for being secure and having automatic security updates & patches.

Impressive geek skills! That's a job I'd just say "Ugh!" at and start looking for someone with skills similar to yours, to do the work. Clint Eastwood said it, I took it to heart: "A man's got to know his limitations."

Another Monday bump.

I honestly believe it's some smarty fooling folks into spending all their computing power to calculate all the security algorithms needed to create an equivalent to Rainbow Tables for nefarious purposes.

Yes, App Stack is only part of the solution. QOE and SAM and the rest of the tools are needed to make a comprehensive picture from which problems can stand out.

I don't know any other company that offers this. And for no extra charge? Exemplary!

Seems like a person must have a pretty big profit margin to send IT Staffers to all the interesting trade shows around the U.S. (or around the world). I don't know a non-profit can do it, unless a person pays out of their own pocket, or unless they happen to live & work near the venue hosting the event. Maybe once I retire…

Dalton M. Ghetti is the one doing the most publicized work. Many examples of pencil-lead-sculpture can be seen here: https://www.google.ca/search?q=dalton+ghetti&lr=&safe=active&as_qdr=all&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi2teb…

13 Trends: This is an interesting set of ideas, first and foremost of which discusses customizing babies through gene splicing/editing. Another word used for this has been eugenics. And folks have discussed the pro's & con's of eugenics for centuries. Building babies that are less susceptible to diseases sounds good. But…

Users jumping ahead via an unexpected path really throws a wrench in the gears. They get exposed to slick salespeople, become enthralled to the shiny pictures, and buy a product that won't scale to the enterprise, that duplicates a solution already purchased for the enterprise, and that becomes a one-off case of the…

One can find some emotional YouTube videos showing children hearing for the first time through Cochlear Implants, and of color-blind people seeing things differently through special glasses. cochlear implant hearing for the first time - YouTube seeing color for the first time - YouTube I imagine parallels to these.

You were kind. I've been half-expecting someone to create that shirt, but caption it with "Weeks after the Mission closes . . ."

And also "Remember what you've read about Application Monitoring." Although new solutions and new tools continue arriving, the same basic troubleshooting & alerting process remains the foundation.

The more The Actuator reveals to us, the more I think about nature, walks in the woods, enjoying a boat sitting on the water . . . There really ought to be a limit to how much depressing or expensive news a world is willing to bear, and common sense should step in and dampen it. Here's a picture I took at sunset while…

Free boat ride on the Duluth harbor for you & Danielle and Maria (weather permitting) for all your work--when the next SWUG meeting is in Duluth, MN!

I've had good service and not-so-good service. Hoping all goes better in the future, but my experience has been running into excellent people in good moods who really know their product line, to working with others who are the opposite.

If your shop is big enough, use Solarwinds NAM, you can have up to 25 pollers. then locate them strategically so snmp won't time out.

DanielleH Dear Danielle: Friday (October 12) I correctly answered Question 10 and was rewarded with a green check. Today (Monday, October 15) I see the dreaded red X where I previously had a green check. What's happening here? Yours, Rick Schroeder

Google Augmented Reality maps . . . Yah, cool sounding, no, not needed. Big NO for all the theft of personal information apps like this one perform on your cell phone, browsing history, location, etc. Frankly I'll go old school & pick up a free map from my state's D.O.T.

I appreciate the improved Network Mapping in the latest version of NPM in Orion Platform 2019.2. I don't know if any mapping tool will fill all my needs and dreams, but it's nice to have automatic mapping of nodes happening in the background, and being easy to add specific new use cases. For example, NPM > Home > Orion…

My team manages "pure" network items, and our SysAdmins manage servers, both physical and virtual. When I learned about VM snapshots I was delighted: fast and easy backups and restores? Who wouldn't love that?! Then I learned that our SA's have a 48-hour limit on storing snapshots--make your snapshot, change the app or the…

More bump.

That school had a wireless language lab with 30 two-way radio headsets; when I started there, they were down to 19 working headsets, and the Spanish teachers were frantic. I was able to get the schematics from the vendor, found each headset had four failed CMOS chips. I cleaned out Digi-key's entire stock (and they said…

Funny! Mine is the first one. So sad there's no by-line . . . Or maybe "I'm so GLAD there's no by-line!" Rick S.
