You've got some great ideas! Caution may be required when using any reference, no matter its assumed veracity and reliability. Having relied on one of them for years, when I eventually began being asked to contribute to their information by reviewing products, it appeared to me they may not be staffed by experts with deep…

I wish Gartner required survey respondents to prove their qualifications for making comparative statements. Suppose the only NMS I am familiar with is SW. Am I qualified to state that it is better than or worse than competing products? I don't think so. Maybe it would suffice for Gartner to force a button/box to be…

Why say dashboards should be static or fluid/dynamic and be limited by a decision? Conditions will determine what's useful. There are benefits to both options, and I'm open to using what's most helpful in each environment. But I do believe in consistency of layout. It makes things easy to find from year to year.

This is NOT a slam against sqlrockstar. But I want to be someone who can search for fun/interesting stories on the Internet, share them with other IT geeks, and get paid for it.

Tesla is impressive and unexpected in so many ways. They should be involved in the RV industry now, as well, since ATV's, UTV's, RV's, travel trailers, PWC's, and boats of all kinds are selling like hotcakes during the times when the Canadian border is closed to U.S. Citizens, and when prudent people eschew airlines to…

Although I've lived in a major shipping port city for the last 25 years, I don't think of silos as being associated with shipping. All my childhood was spent surround by farm silos, and that's my context.

I find it strange we see such inconsistent results. I found the answer quickly, and it seemed obvious. I'd love to share thought processes and experiences with those who got today's question wrong. What did I do differently? Surely the questions & Hints & examples at the Test site aren't changing. We should all see the…

I was expecting to read you'd ordered serial adapters at $50 each--something more than the savings. Silly Procurement, making assumptions again.

I've seen that security employed where a remote user with one of our PC's--located inside a different business--occasionally needed to connect via a site-to-site VPN tunnel to our corporate office. Everyone in that remote business's office regularly saw the credentials on the post-it note, and would log into our company as…

https://www.google.ca/search?q=duluth+minnesota&lr=&safe=active&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiH_b7gkObUAhUp0YMKH… When the weather's nice in Duluth, it's like heaven. If you like some wild extremes of weather, more so than your typical city that says "if you don't like the weather, just wait 20 minutes," Duluth…

Quantum Security on Internet communications? Spooky and sweet simultaneously! My son's working on earning a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics; he's the first on my list to receive this forwarded story. My security team is a close second. Thanks for sharing this!

Google's "Don't Be Evil" motto sounded so wonderful when they started out. Now, as their actual actions become more widely understood and publicized, they look to be no better than any other company. Hopefully still better than certain oppressive governments and intrusive agents . . . I'm probably naive about that.

The important thing is providing / seeing useful information that's actionable. The format in which it's presented may be new or old, better or worse, but if it's consistent, if we know it and know where to look for the important bits, and if there's little or no learning curve to make it available to those who can use it…

Using NCM was a great way to give staff incentive for using Change Management / Change Control. NCM simplified the task of learning what changed and when. Combining it with NPM's log for Solarwinds administrators who were active at the time, and Cisco TACACS Reports to show who logged in, at what time, and issued which…

Hacked by a stranger's attached file, or via a link to an unsecure social media ap? Of course! Why would anyone NOT suspect malfeasance and skullduggery when receiving such an item? Everyone SHOULD (no-, MUST) suspect the worst and prepare their social media surfing along with their hardware and files and apps to be…

Sadly, I've felt pushback from coworkers when I advocate Orion modules for their areas of expertise. Their justified responses focus on that same "problem of many “single panes of glass”." NPM isn't a single pane of glass. It can't show all the modules and information in one screen at a glance. It CAN offer a unified…

We purchased and installed ACI to accomplish this same isolation. The segmentation is growing, but the initial installation was in "network-centric mode", and is moving towards the isolated app-centric or server-centric segmentation and isolation. It's not easy, it's not fast, it's not what Management believed Cisco was…

Really--a hint was required for some folks on Question 11 on September 17? A good common-sense-hat answers that one without question (or hint).

Although it's inconvenient, my organization clears all configurations on equipment before recycling it. This includes removing and physically shredding hard drives and memory that could store configs. It's not cheap, but it's the right thing to do.

IM me via Thwack, I'll share anything I can. In my environment, multicast had to be enabled on all VLANs that contain the messaging servers and end clients before this was successful. If you happened to have a very small number of SSID's, it might not be a bad idea to create a new one and dedicate it to this technology.…

Similarly, I replaced a pair of 7609's with a pair of 7009's that took over all SVI's from the 7609's and also their management addresses. A new discovery showed the new hardware & interfaces, but left all of the original 7609 interfaces in place but grayed out. Since the old interfaces' data is useful, I kept them for a…

I can appreciate the idea. But don't you think the AD servers need to be adjusted so they record the transactions correctly? I think treating the cause will result in UDT working the way you need, instead of turning to Splunk as a work-around for a symptom. Offered in a gentle and friendly manner. I don't walk in your…
