Since Solarwinds SQL requirements are changing, I recommend you contact either Solarwinds Technical Support or you Solarwinds Sales Engineer and talk with them about your plans.

Some Solarwinds products are no longer compatible with SQL versions earlier than 2016 (NTA, for example). SQL 2016 adds new, more powerful, more efficient functionality, and Solarwinds products are designed to leverage it, and are dependent on it.

The correct answer depends on your environment and your Netflow needs. If all of your traffic passes through a Netflow-compatible device (let's say it's a router), then that's the only place you may need Netflow enabled. Routers are often positioned ideally to capture the traffic you want in a hub & spoke environment.…

This will be particularly useful to my organization.

Sometimes you want to help out, to figure out that obscure bit of IT trivia. What a major score for Geekdom it would be! And sometimes it's OK to

I tweaked the instructions above slightly to provide more exact instructions for the new version of Windows server my Orion uses. Rick Schroeder, 20170629

Sounds like another Feature Request. Make it so!

Sounds like a new Feature Request, Craig . . . I like the idea!

Excellent!

Additional bump . . .

Sorry--thanks for letting me know.

I have Cisco ASA's in the lab that can be used for this Beta. Sorry, I have no PCI or Checkpoints. Let me know if the ASA's are suitable for this product's beta test. Rick S.

If user groups aren't a good idea, how would someone get this far?

Wunderbar!

Congratulations to the Channel Partners who received recognition / awards! Maybe one day I'll make it to Europe to attend one of these.

I use a service account created just for Solarwinds to do these jobs. There are some options to consider when troubleshooting failed backups: * Is the account locked out? * Has someone changed the service account's password in AD but not changed it in NCM (or vice-versa)? * Is something else causing the failure?* Has the…

If you're using firewalls, routers, and Layer 3 switches that support NetFlow, there's a Resource to add to any view that is called Total Transferred Packets. Once added, you should be able to open it up far enough to see your specific L3 device and determine how many packets pass through it per time period. You should…

Would you be open to the concept of a known bug in your 3850 Cisco code? Check out CSCuf90316. I see multiple users are reporting high discards on 3850 ports, and Cisco has identified a bug and has provided code with remediation. By any chance are you running version 3.2.2 code. or 15.0(1.1)EX? If so, an upgrade to 3.3.2…

It's never a bad thing to go back to basics. Discards have fairly easily understood causes. Sometimes it's as simple as seeing the stats and errors that have incremented and associating them to something easy like speed & duplex settings. Other times it's a matter of matching up the correct VLAN's on the ports on both…

Don't give up. As long as you have the right community strings and IP address, NPM can manage Eaton UPS's right out of the box. You may need to upgrade the UPS's SNMP card software, but you'll end up with something that can alert you when conditions match your criteria. I have several dozen Eaton UPS's managed with NPM.

Welcome, O 2910 MVPs! The wide world of networking has been laid before your feet. Your kingdom awaits you!

You'd be wise to poll the community about firewall support satisfaction.

I've been using Sidewinders for 20 years. Stable, DARPA-designed, they include a ton of features at no extra charge (HA, SmartFilter, NextGen Application Awareness, Secure Sendmail, Split DNS, etc.). They run on a hardened Unix FreeBSD kernel, so if you know tcpdump and man pages, you're set. I really think they're a best…

Both Kiwi and Orion NPM Syslog can do what you need. For Kiwi: 1. Configure a router to send its syslog data to your Kiwi server 2. Configure a Rule on Kiwi with an intuitive name 3. Build a new Filter in that Rule on Kiwi, named intuitively, and tell it what to look for in the syslog message that's of interest 4. Build a…

Yesterday, April 9, 2018, Solarwinds' Customer Engagement Manager Jessica Ikard called me to talk about my satisfaction with their products, licenses, platforms, and processes. We talked for nearly thirty minutes, she asked many questions, I gave her the straight info and pulled no punches. I see good things coming from SW…

Perhaps this philosophy will help: * If you have a query about how or why something works or doesn't work, or if you have a low-priority issue that you don't mind working on over the next two or three weeks, it seems opening a support ticket online is the way to go. * If your issue is serious, a major outage, a good…

I discovered a similar problem after upgrading NCM. In my instance, it was caused by the newer NCM version limiting the rights and access for my individual credentials. To get full access to all the scripts I'd created prior to the upgrade I must log in as the Administrator account, even though my personal account has full…

Let's first be sure you're comparing apples to apples. Your NetPath data will be sourced from one of your SolarWinds pollers. Your traceroute data is probably coming from your laptop or PC--unless you've taken care to run the traceroute from the actual SolarWinds server that's hosting the NetPath setup for that…

And received kudos from my boss & coworkers for highlighting problems of which they were previously unaware. The result should be increased uptime as UPS's are better maintained proactively.

We're required to keep up with Microsoft's server changes, restrictions, and limitations. Whenever MS announces version retirements, we are off those versions well before hand. This ensures we limit our liabilities by being current, by only using fully-supported systems with current security patches and with forward paths.…
