I've seen two movies in the last year that dealt with technology advocated by business/government, adopted by the masses, and abused by negative individuals with negative agendas. And I think people responsible for decision making should watch both, for the intent of being forewarned. 1. The Circle. The Circle (2017) -…

Certainly I get a lot more learning out of these kinds of questions that require a person to interpret the Test environment. And there's no one to blame but myself, since I ALWAYS try to include a request for these kinds of questions in every monthly Mission review. I much prefer real-world examples for my Hints pages.…

Automation can be a vulnerability. I've seen HVAC building automation become the norm, and the products deployed may not be compatible with your network or its security policies. Before allowing teams to jump on that bandwagon, understand those folks' current methods of managing their hardware/environments, and then…

I'd be daunted, intimidated, and depressed to have to start up or manage a Help Desk for a large organization today. Those people are the front line of problem resolution, and must know so MUCH about every product, location, department in an organization. Plus they deal with irate customers while working with…

I like part of this idea, and I'd modify it such that SW would automatically choose the APE based on some criteria with the discovered client. I break my network equipment down by region and site-name; it would be nice if I had a way to tell NPM that new nodes with specific characters in their names must be managed by a…

Maybe. I'm doubtful. From the "pop culture graphic creation" impression this created in my mind, I don't know that the graphics creator knows "Astrophysics" as a word OR as a concept. I have just two astrophysicist friends; they're tremendously entertained by folks who talk seriously about astrology, and by folks who…

How far can you get in one of these events with only English? Or are you multi-lingual, to help get the SW/Orion word out to anyone?

Yes, it is. And the entire story that accompanies it reveals how profit and pollution trump common sense and health.

It's not too late to show your creativity and submit a Halloween story for Thwacksters to enjoy, as I did last year (here: A Halloween Network Tale )

* How important is APM to your job?* We don't have APM, nor do we have a suitable substitute. Apparently it's not that important to us. However, I disagree. Too much time and money is spent chasing causes of slowness and not knowing what users' experiences are and not understanding the specifics of every step that can…

I'm willing to bet I work with people, or have friends, who put themselves or their employers at risk through unauthorized / insecure shadow-IT practices.

Downtime in a medical environment is particularly problematic (to me, at least--it's where I work). It's why I've been a big fan of deploying network hardware that can support six nines (99.9999% up time). When I have to upgrade a network switch's IOS, sites that pushed back against the (seemingly) higher-cost chassis…

"Intolerable Speech" contains some excellent guidelines for companies and media giants and individuals alike. How do adopt them internationally, globally, locally, and personally? How do we enforce them in our personal lives, and in our conversations in ways that will foster improvements for all who read and speak and…

TACACS has revealed some excellent configuration typos issued by me and my peers, and also definitively answered the question: "Who made that change?" It's also shown where more devices or interfaces than expected were adjusted, through human error. TACACS was a complex project to implement uniformly across all our…

If only we could compare costs of identical businesses and processes using, and NOT using, VDI.

It's definitely the experience I've had, too. I think that's sad. Maybe pathetic. Perhaps even deplorable. At a previous employment location (a public school district), they couldn't pay the going rate for IT staff, but they compensated by providing excellent training and more PTO. They flew me anywhere that offer the…

The question remains: "What does HA mean?" I thought that might be answered in the text, or perhaps be forwarded to the Thwack group for consideration and ideas. "HA" means different things to different groups: * Users may not know what it is at all. Or if they do, they may take it literally: Something or some service is…

Sounds like a good topic for a Klingon Opera . . .

Although it doesn't omit data breaches from the realm of possibilities, sometimes physics ends up dictating details that result in competing products looking very much alike. Aerodynamics dictates the overall shape. Weight limitations and performance requirements refine the shape. Stealth needs finalizes the shape. Given…

The problem lies in the App being "good" for the vendor and those to whom your personal data, harvested by the app, is sold. As opposed to something useful and secure that the user can work with accomplish work efficiently, without having personal data harvested & sold for targeting spam & advertising at that same user.…

Oh dear. I've seen that. And also: * "Someone misspelled something on the Internet!" * "Someone missed using an Oxford Comma, and I'm teaching them why that's so very wrong!" * "Someone's opinion doesn't match mine and I'm going to . . . "

I see 46 Reports with "Inventory" associated with them in my NPM 12.01. I can discover and display all my Cisco and F5 and HP serial numbers using the canned reports. On what devices are you hoping to discover serial numbers via UnDP output?

GitHub and ICE. Won't it be great one day when we're all one world, all on the same team, all helping each other, building bridges instead of walls?

Wouldn't one want (expect?) any app to be forced to endure internal security scrutiny, then external security testing by a group of white hat companies, BEFORE a very-large distributor (like FB, MS, Amazon, etc.) makes it available to the public? What's App's vulnerability is dangerous at best.
