In the not too distant past I beta tested a version of NPM that included a built-in dark theme option. It wasn't documented where users could find it--I had to ask the folks in the UX interview session for it, and one of them subtly provided the odd keyboard combination to activate it. It wasn't as dramatic as I'd hoped,…

The AWS part of the cloud is unreliable because 10,000+ accounts can be written to by unauthorized strangers? Shock me, you haven't.

I agree with your observation. Of course, this is the kind of question that Geeks and nerds don't often get asked within a forum of people they regard as peers. That one thing probably resulted in so many responses. Now, put on our "paranoid hats" and analyze the responses and determine how much private information was…

I seriously appreciate (and enjoy) your comments, Radioteacher I've been trying to get through the silo wall with our SA's, and let me do some SAM work with them, even on a trial basis. The major pushback from them has become the cost of the product and its support. I may never get SAM through the doors here. My dreams…

I'd almost expect this to be available to NPM while being tied to UDT. At least NPM should be able to discover this information, even if it's in UDT. And it seems reasonable to be able to Manage multiple similar nodes and edit them all in Manage Nodes the way you suggest. Certainly you can select multiple similar nodes in…

Paul, does Peter know you "borrowed" his costume for your user icon? Spider-Geek, Spider-Geek What's his topic for Thwack this week? Does he use wireless WEP? He's got radioactive strep--LOOK-OUT! There goes the Spider-Geek! On the net he works, any time, day or night When your app is fast, you know he got it right!…

"Let the scalliwag chew on Zinc whiskers for a few days, then bring 'im back up & see if 'e talks." I worked in two data centers that had zinc whiskers growing beneath the raised floor tiles, unbeknownst to us all. Removing a floor tile broke of those tiny metal hairs, which floated in the plenum beneath the server racks.…

Since there's no "Day 15" entry yet, I'll post one here: Day 15: Change: to make different in some particular. Change is the norm. If we don’t change, we stagnate and die. Change can be difficult. It can also be fun. How you perceive it may be a matter of your choice, or of your environment and the stress brought on you by…

Identifying "safer" sites (Note I didn't say they 100% completely safe!) is one services that Anti-Virus companies attempt to provide. How safe are you if you have a current subscription and updated A/V signatures and you go to a site that's listed as OK/Approved/Green by your A/V manufacturer? Probably safer than one they…

The Factory Outlet truck makes it seem as if pigs are manufactured in some building. Ha!

The turkey looks nicely done. Occasionaly I see grilled turkey drumsticks at major events that are overcooked. I like the looks of yours!

TMNT's? Or for the points?

Sadly (I'm a Vikings fan), the Patriots won it.

Occam's Razor is a good tool for troubleshooting network issues. But if you want your mind blown, read "Occam's Scalpel" by Theodore Sturgeon. You might come away with a different set of questions . . .

What a nice, optimistic set of comments for the Surface Book. Almost enough to get me to go check out their prices for Christmas. We all must be closet optimists. Having been burned so many times by so many new products and patches and upgrades, we still hope for a future product that will be fast and reliable and secure,…

"Does virtualization have a future?" Ha! Imagine if it DIDN'T! I like to imagine virtualization applied in more places and across more parts of life than just the data center. We have a kind of virtualization in Television programs and in movie theaters. Certainly books combine with our minds to create new virtual worlds…

It's more work, but after adding or discovering nodes for NPM, it's easy to select them all and apply NCM to them all at once. I know, not what you asked for. But it's the method I use.

Yes, we had zinc whiskers in two data centers. Each time someone lifted up a floor tile to work beneath it, microscopic filaments of zinc would break off and float through the air. Of course the area beneath the data center's raised floor was a cold air plenum, and was blown or pulled up into each server rack. It was a…

How is Dameware traffic and session secured?

It sure seems like simply enabling traps on the switches would provide you the POE info you seek. I wouldn't say "no" to POE graphics on NPM Nodes, either. Sure, a person can build a job that issues a "show power inline" command, or even a "show int count err" and learn a ton of great info, but it would be convenient to…

Yes, it's a daunting task, one that we hope is never called on. Exactly like a catastrophic accident health insurance policy, you don't dare move forward without it if you're a responsible person. However, some folks can't afford the same insurance that others can, and this has its parallel here, too. Smaller businesses…

My theory is maybe the very competitive and hurried Thwacker reads / scans the hints too quickly, answers incorrectly, and then takes the blow of not being able to compete with points or for prizes as well as others. I can understand some of the cases where the questions or answers or hints are confusing, misleading, or…

Wow. I know you know a LOT, and have to plan and learn even more. But this . . . Most impressive.

Life is sweet when you're pitching a fun product that helps customers. Keep up the great work!

There are some credible resources out there (including several great TED Talks presentations) that discuss fears like nuclear attack and cyber attacks, and many of them come from a misunderstanding of actual risks and trends. It turns out many alarming situations are at the front of our focus due to media outlets trying to…

PBS did a fun story about a missile silo that had a major accident--a worker dropped a tool from high up in the silo. It bounced and broke a rocket fuel container, which started spraying highly toxic fuel into the silo. Given some of the human errors that may have occurred within a silo, and how their clean-up may be…

I once sat through a job interview where the potential employer asked me to describe myself in one word. "Concise." Ha! Little did he know . . . ;^)

Remember how long it took to build Boston's "Big Dig" tunnel, and then how long it took to remodel it? I'm not optimistic about Boston modifying its infrastructure to support self-driving vehicles in a relatively short (ten years?) time frame, based on the Big Dig's problems. Still, it WOULD be helpful!
