Netflix using machine learning to improve streaming seems reasonable customer care--something that could put them above the competition. Netflix using machine learning to predict when I'm going to do something, and to manipulate what I do, when I do it, and how I do it . . . well, that would just be evil. I hope that never…

Microsoft Sonar: I'm for anything that'll improve security and performance--WITHOUT increasing risk. We've trusted Microsoft blindly in the past, so shame on us if this causes more problems and new vulnerabilities. Goodness, I forgot I'd buy Avaya and Cisco, and then convert all of the Cisco gear to run off new/secure versions of Nortel's Java Device Manager. Man, that product was sweet! Fast, reliable, complete and fully-featured/fully-functional! Not to mention intuitive! It beat CLI all to heck for minimizing learning curve. And…

APC UPS's are my biggest challenge to manage effectively. Unless one has the StruxureWare APC application, one cannot manage multiple APC UPS's simultaneously. Worse, we had StruxureWare and it DOS'd me and my network team with 500K e-mail alerts simultaneously, tying up our Exchange servers and overloading our Inboxes. We…

Associating old data with spent nuclear fuel is a brilliant way of showing how important "old" data is. Maybe it gives someone the ability to mine your old passwords and predict your new ones. Maybe it provides information about your relationships that could be used against you in the future. Properly disposing of obsolete…

If we can break down the silos, I can agree that Network Management should evolve into System Management. Especially after seeing the UCS virtual switch interfaces, VM Ware and V-Motion, and particularly Cisco ACI. Between all of those, it seems the end goal is for one person to be able to see all parts of an electronic…

@"gfsutherland" Thank you very much for the idea about traveling the mail run. We hadn't heard of it, but will look it up as we plan our visit.

"What kinds of monitoring tools do I need?" They must be: * Simultaneously powerful, scalable, and affordable * Easy to understand, deploy, use, configure, modify/customize without requiring additional training. My best friend believes "If you have to read the manual to use an app, the app was not properly written." I…

I rely on this information almost daily--in the background. Each time something new is required, it may mean digging into the RegEx reference materials--some of which can be found here: RegExr: Learn, Build, & Test RegEx http://www.zytrax.com/tech/web/regex.htm Swift Packets! Rick S.

Hump Day has become much less tedious, thanks to the fun research & sharing by sqlrockstar. My gratitude to you, Sir. * VMware will evolve until it's replaced. And then the original systems will become vulnerable to a new hack that's out of our present ability to imagine. And so on, and so forth. * The Nashville Hotel…

That is my true hope--that M.S. is improving. After years of dealing with DOS and Windows For Workgroups and Windows 95,98,ME,2000,NT,2003, etc., they've left a powerfully negative impression on me as an I.T. user of their products, and as an I.T. professional who must support their solutions. Always hopeful, remembering…

I spend more time in Security meetings now than at any other time in the last twenty years of my IT career.

Understanding what physical resources UDT requires is an interesting conundrum. I see what appears to me to be conflicting information about how many UDT devices can be monitored by a single UDT poller. https://support.solarwinds.com/@api/deki/files/9924/ScalabilityEngineGuidelines.pdf The first document linked shows the…

It occurs to me that we all might be missing a basic and powerful option. "A good defense is a strong offense." What are we doing to reduce the attacks at the source? Yes, that dives right off the edge into the political/religious realm, but we've all got hammers (firewalls, AV, security policies), so everything looks like…

I attended an outdoor fair where there was a larger quadcopter carrying a digital camera overhead, apparently videoing the crowds. Sadly, the operator brought it in front of the bleachers where many people were enjoying and outdoor presentation. Its motion and noise were very distracting, and caused some of us thinking…

There could be song title or a band name in there: "The Cup of a Carpenter" might make an inspirational tune for some church folks. "Carpenter's Cup" could be the band that sang it. I've always been a bit skeptical about why a carpenter's son's blood would be collected in a cup that belongs to his family. Who brings family…

I suspect that, despite training people to temporarily avoid bars or pubs, and despite beer perhaps having to be discarded, people are waiting anxiously to return to their old habits of drinking with friends in pubs or bars. We'll need to learn a LOT more about Covid-19 and its effect on our bodies, the possibilities of…

Cool? Scary? What's your take on that?

This was a useful report--thank you! The last thought about what should come first (deal with default passwords, train users, etc.) might be something that can be easily and quickly evaluated based on a specific organization's exposure and risks. Are you more vulnerable to devastation from someone failing victim to…

Strange--the video was perfect for me. The available answers also are subject to intuitive logic--I heard the info in the video, then stopped & thought about the four answers and asked myself "which one of these CAN'T be true?" It was obvious to me . . . The question, to me, seemed to ask "Which of the answers below can't…

Since Solarwinds doesn't offer a resilient enterprise DHCP solution, and Infoblox does, I need a way to get all the IPAM and DHCP information from Infoblox into a place where my Solarwinds IPAM and UDT can leverage it. And it needs to be automatic. Or, does anyone believe this wouldn't be a time & labor & cycle saver?…

Do you use ISE or ACI to accomplish your restrictions preemptively / proactively? We recently adopted both, but without receiving sufficient training for my teams. The result is they're an unknown and a challenge. But they LOOK like they're exactly what is needed to do the job right.
