I like your optimistic attitude--that your recommendations will be received with equal weight and value as the financial considerations. My personal experience has more frequently been falling into the category of "I gave them great advice, provided best practices that are industry-recommended and are recognized standards.…

This was a new one to me: Grizzly Bear claws damaged fiber in British Columbia at the site of a land slide that had damaged a highway.…

The picture feels like private security forces--black with dark sun glasses. But on a beach? Interesting!

I like your thoughts, and I'll only submit one thought about NOT being able to build with the end in mind: I can design and build and provide a network based on Management's guidelines for what they want it to do at Date X. Management is unwilling to provide those specifics. They expect my team to see the future and…

By that time you'll have a REAL cat inside your phone via transporter or holo-suite technology, and you'll be able to put your own head or feet on it, or that of your buddy or your boss. And it'll wash your car and vacuum the carpet in your home automatically.

Heat Pumps seem to be reasonable and solid tech if you have the ability and space and funds. One wonders: extrapolating out the increased impact of more and more heat pumps putting more warmth into the Earth, taking more cooling from it in the summer, does this have ANY impact on global warming? Well, yes, it does. But how…

Intel's CEO, Brian Krzanich, certainly did not do the right thing. And he assuredly knew he was performing illegal insider trading. Let's hope this type of behavior becomes less common in the future, and it will if we can work to instill better morals and behavior in the coming generations. But it requires that we, who…

Perfect timing for making that personal change for next summer's (fill in the blank: wedding, class reunion, hiking/camping trip, family reunion, etc.).

If your network management system requires a management information base (MIB) file you can obtain it from the Defense Center or the 3D managed devices at: etc/sf/DCEALERT.MIB Also in order to perform health monitoring and Threshold Crossover Alarms (network performance monitoring) for FirePower products, below Mentioned…

These are examples of solutions where a person or team can win or fail, depending on their experience and training. Don't try to reinvent this wheel on your own; get training. Get budget to bring in experts--and don't let them leave until everyone on your team is up to speed with supporting the new environment. A missed…

This is still a great and needed idea . . .

My team is working on the applications' fingerprints this year, in preparation for deploying ISE and the downloadable ACLs that will be applied to every switch port. That, plus using the discovered data to create a new / current CMDB--these seem right up the Network Tomography alley. I truly wish strict standards had been…

You may enjoy this poll I created last year, which encourages Thwack members to share their company's ratio of employees to Network Support staff. https://thwack.solarwinds.com/polls/3272#start=25

Bump. We're doing more FirePOWER with FTD than planning on keeping ASA's in "ASA-mode". More and more of our ASA's are being upgraded to FirePOWER solutions, and our firewall purchases are all going to be managed via FMC. Better support of this branch of Cisco's solutions is something we need from SolarWinds.

These are all great observations and ideas. I don't have much pity for those who procrastinate their implementation of better solutions, better team work, and better silo demolition. One small phrase jumps out as particularly relevant: " . . . careless insiders are real threats . . . " When I see team members who…

Regarding The Atlantic's article about going home to telecommute to work and never going back to work, I'm up for that. I worked for some months away from the office as a best practice to delay the COVID-19 surge from overwhelming our local health care systems' ICCU's, and it's working. My productivity didn't decrease when…

CourtesyIT put the finger on the right button. My organization needed to update our payment solution so it could be put on the network instead of staying out of band. Once PCI inspection and the threat of penalties was scheduled to ensure the new solution would be compliant, the resources and time were suddenly made…

I got one, too. I remember filling out the Thwack survey for it. The first X people who responded got a Delorean.

Hokey, breath taking, heart breaking and sometimes-predictable, I enjoy the recent years' Dr. Who episodes. Some are downright scary; others make my eyes sweat. A large number are highly quotable and contain many great ideas and morals and conclusions. But then there's the toilet plungers . . . Oh, the ignominy those prop…

Looking forward to points from attending LEM yesterday. It turns out LEM is different than I expected--I was looking for a sort of "Syslog Reporter On Steroids", when in fact LEM is a SIEM similar to Splunk--but not scaled as large as Splunk. I was hoping to replace our Splunk with LEM, but the instructor said LEM can't…

The graphic should have come out more family-friendly, like this:

It's a good article. My environment (25 hospitals, 75 clinics, on-call 7x24) we have VM versions of NPM primary and polling, and resilient SQL. NPM isn't yet mission-critical, but it's critical to my team being able to efficiently triage an outage, know its scope, and understand where to focus our attention to recover the…

I was discussing that exact topic with a friend over the weekend. I've run into younger generation It students who want it all to be easy, and they claim it's very hard today, but people of my generation and earlier had it much easier--things weren't so complicated back then. Ha. It is to laugh. I thought "So much was…

I see an interesting parallel between creating load via monitoring, and monitoring (observing) quantum mechanics via the double slit experiment. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1998/02/980227055013.htm My son has nearly completed a degree in Theoretical Particle Physics, and along his path he tried to explain to me…

Agreed. I've survived as the primary "Network Guy" in a health care system with 17,000 employees by measuring twice and cutting once, and then falling on my sword when I cut incorrectly. Being a responsible adult and a good employee means: * Admitting your mistake * Explaining what went wrong & why it went wrong. This is…
