Thanks, This is definitely a great and necessary piece of information to have prior to attempting the upgrade on a production instance. Peter

Actually, that's really hot schtuff. I look forward to the alerting engine getting modules written for it to do these things without bouncing out to an external, SW's support for that isn't so robust.

You would have to craft a custom job that uses the run command feature of NCM. While I'm not sure this is possible, I'm guessing that it is, and that you should be able to with Cisco devices, craft a run command that looks something like: wr net tip.ad.dr.ess/$(NodeName). Most tftp servers don't allow random write, so if…

To address the last part first: You can have any new MIB's included by submitting them to SW via either email to support@solarwinds.com or submitting them to http://solarwinds.leapfile.com to the email address support@solarwinds.NET (Notice the emphasized .net). Someone in SW adds them in and rebuilds the MIB database…

Hey, how about fixing SNMP Traps, Syslog, multiple UnDP table correlation, just to point out several long-standing gigantic deficiencies that never seem to make it into a "what we're working on" post? Peter

I've looked at this issue numerous times from a variety of standpoints.. I'm also mostly inclined to use *nix for outbound mail services on any given network, even though we use an exchange server predominately. Were it me, I would create a VM to handle outbound SMTP for my monitoring system. With the myriad of things that…

Yeah, the official "unofficial" guideline from Denny the other day was "Wait until SP2 at least". I think it's SP2 + wait a week to see what else is broken. If I had've upgraded this round I would have had to uninstall all the software, and reinstall it all from scratch using 9.1 and rolling it up to SP5. What makes it…

I have to echo a strong need for item #1 in particular. The separation of syslog, traps, and polls is a constant source of frustration. The fact that I can't write an event to the NPM when I receive a particular type of trap or syslog, and then alert on it is majorly handicapping. Many devices in my network don't have…

I categorize strictly with the use of a custom property. In our case, it's all based on customer number. From the customer number, anything else relevant can be derived via the NPM database or other systems. Of course, we have a couple of very large ones, but overall it makes quite a bit of sense.

Great, looks like I'm waiting to hear the feedback on SP3 then. I'm guessing 2 weeks for SP3 to come out, if it moves fast like SP1 and 2. SW - you guys looking to hire a QA manager? If not, you should be. Peter
-
Soon is really a non-answer. I'm sure I'm not the only one who resents the "wait and see" approach to SW software releases. I'm already expecting I have to wait at least 2 weeks after SP2 is released to see about SP3, or at least what issues are still open that people are complaining about. Peter

So, the goal is to get notified if any ports with a specific text in the description matches. In my experience, no, the SW way to accomplish what you're trying to do is assign a custom property to interfaces, and the alert 'filtering' you're looking for will happen via that mechanism. This is what we do for interfaces that…

To add to the discussion just a wee bit.. Not only templates for the email notifications, but templates in general for things like.. SMTP server, list of recipients (i.e.: Alert Groups). In all fairness, a very primitive manual "template" feature is available with the import/export functionality, along with the copy to…

SMS delivery is quite a bit more reliable than email delivery. Especially through RIM's BES. While the BB is hugely popular, and still has a number of features that smoke the iPhone, almost anything can support SMS notifications, and that's really the broad swath we want to see cut as network admins. If you're BES is down,…

I never saw a response on this, is Alteon/Nortel ever going to make it into a device template so I can use NCM to manage them? Peter

Here's how I see it, and how I'm rolling it out. Top-Level Container.. in my case, it's a group named for the parent identifier (In my case, a numeric 5-6 digit number). Under that, one container per device. Under that, a dynamic query that grabs all interfaces, something along the lines of "select * from interfaces where…
