Hot/hot can be achieve at a number of applications, but the system and work flows need to be designed to handle the fact that there may be a little delay as data is replicated, and what to do if no replication is possible. Cloud Load balancing across geographically separated reverse proxies with Web Optimization, WAF, and…

One reason why you need to really check your business requirements. Usually when someone tells me it's "all in one," "a solution for anything," or even "this is the silver bullet," that is a red flag for me. Not every solution fits every business requirement. Storage is no different. It is important to really understand…

The new STIX and TAXII open standard along with Soltra Edge a (Collect/Create Threat Repositories) also provide a means to share threat intelligence across member organizations anonymously. This would not limit Solarwinds to one threat source. Solrta Edge is free to deploy, there are plenty of paid and free open sources to…

Typosquating is reaching new levels usually taking advantage of registration loopholes. Good post. A lot of execs are targeted with wire fraud using these methods. As for phishing and malicious links you would be surprised at how quickly these sites go up, and if the register is notified how quickly they come back down.…

Yeah that worked for my example. what other variables do we have access to in CustomHTML resources? maybe this feature just needs to make it easier to insert variables as needed.

Doing things right and secure means for most developers that they need to slow down so they can explain how things are working to a security professional. Because of this, secure and complete code is few and far in between. Even secure code can be poorly implemented, or systems misconfigured. One the other side, the guys…

mfmahler, After my recent switch to an industrial setting this last month, I noticed one observation, that information security has one thing in common with industrial safety, "The Human Factor." Because of this I know how to drive the Security Awareness Related Program, because the execs already understand the human…

I use Reservations for those that need to have the same IP every time, otherwise there is no real benefit especially when you can simply find them in IPAM or other tools. Also a benefit is the DHCP sets other settings automatically as supported on the device.

I like the idea of self-service password resets. User Names and Passwords are a week form of authentication if used by them selves anyways. If you want to really be secure introduce multi-factor authentication. Many of these tools actually come with a "Forgot my Password" plugin for windows.

So this is what you get when you put someone from InfoSec, NetOps, and CoreOps in the same general area. Watch out for flying foam darts.. For the most part we work together, it is just when we have conflicting projects when we run into each others road blocks.

We do the same (unit recently it was working), but as an organization grows quickly, on occasion a few managers fall out and get their own technology solutions, cause they think IT is too busy. In a recent project I was switching out some vanity urls. The business owner said I missed one, I replied back with the Whois…

byrona, technical training should be an important part of your career progression. Even when it seems their is no daylight a good IT manager will see the value of sending out a sysadmin for a week long training at least once a year or two. Otherwise you and your manager will always run the risk of being technically…

muwale Don't forget the secure "users" that will make the passwords. In reality the best implementations I've seen is in businesses that took the lead in BYOD, and set the rules with its employees, set boundaries where IT will and will not support, sand boxed data to areas of the device that can be deleted. Basically…

There are some large organizations both public and private that have taken BYOD to the next level. I think I posted before that IBM and King County Washington both come to mind. They both have a large mobile work force and have use an MDM to keep track of all the devices. On the federal government side, there are some…

This is one Feature that is needed if we are going to fully manage DNS records via the IPAM interface. we have 14 sites, with over 2,000 DNS records. Searching and filtering could make a huge dent in helping us leverage IPAM. Especially when going through the DNS Record Mismatch Issues.

We currently use Load Testing Consulting & Software - Web Performance, to do our load tests, it has a similar setup to WPM, but includes some agents we install through out the environment that collect and report real-time data to the main server after the stress test job is completed. It would be great if Solarwinds…

There have been a few local businesses taking advantage of the near by Poke Stops. Placing signs, and even purchasing lures on the pokestop and advertising that they will keep it renewed for so many hours and to stop by for a poketreat, or to vote for your favorite team. A lot of such businesses have seen an huge increase…

I have used it in the past, the new version is pretty cool, as it can emulate a lot more equipment. I think it would be work testing out. It's kind of like creating a network diagram you can actually test configurations on.

jkump, I know that Airwatch and a few others have the ability to constantly nag users that don't meet certain requirements. The way most smart devices are right now, only the user can initiate the actual patching. You do have a lot of flexibility to report and create policies and even push recommended software, and sync…

For public web app I have found firing up dev sand boxes in the cloud very useful. Especially when testing out technologies side by side and figuring out how something might react. Anyone thing we have used the cloud for is load testing. There are a few tools out there they can tell you just how much load your website can…

My comment is not just limited to cloud systems, but it still applies. Adding to the muddy water Jfrazier speaks of, some organizations have a management layer they sometimes confuses immediate cost savings at the cost of interoperability, later demanding that the other solution be supported too. They sometimes do not…

Good point on the BYOD mobile side. Some companies have embraced Shadow IT, by actually calling it out and giving it boundaries. I believe IBM does this with it's work force as most of them are mobile. There are parts that are supported by IT, and parts that are not. Another example is King County Washington, that has an…

Virtuallization is where it is at. VMware is great, but there are a few other competing technologies just around the corner.

Some of us have Databases Hosted for our websites, this is actually not that new. Now to put other critical core databases in the cloud, that would require a lot of planning. Everyone has pointed out so far you need to consider both security of the data and availability. Without these your no better off in the cloud than…

Would this work for CA Signed Certs?

I think the biggest benefit from a ticketing system beyond tracking, is the immediate response users receive on the status of their issue. What makes this even better is when an actual IT member backs up this status with a followup and good service.
-
When you have a multi-homed BGP internet connection, this can be helpful in pointing out which ISP is giving you the issue, and to pass that information on to them so they can fix it. Also helpful to identify strange routing issues.

SNMP walking also helps a lot. I find that if you are looking for a value compare to the real device and walk for it. Then check the MIB library to see what the OID stands for. SNMP can open up the possibilities for a lot of information. Match it with TRAPS and syslog and you have both polling at 5 minutes and what is…

Yeah I read comments that sounded like it should be working. There must have been some code changes that took this customization away from use, just like it broke a number of my alerts that relied on the old variables like location and URL. Not fun updating alerts. Would really like to see this feature come back, not sure…

I have used similar tools, will be interesting how it integrates with other Solarwind's products.
