Perhaps a compromise. Have the IoT device vendor build a better layer of security into the device with specific instructions intended for the average end user?

Great write up. Love the thought of using NCM to look at STIG V keys

Reporting is critical. So many times, audit logs are not reviewed, events are not reported, intrusions are not discovered. Reporting on these critical items can be automated so there is no reason not to.

I really enjoyed the article about Trump and Clinton. Third party is looking pretty interesting to a lot of people.

Sometimes that backfires. By being go to guy, every stinking time.

Wish I had read this before answering. Thank you for taking Les Werkmoplay as an acceptable answer.

I remember NT4.0 all too well. When it came out, I was teaching HP-UX, Thinnet and Thicknet for the US Navy. I was also working part time at a local computer\networking shop. We were doing 4.0 upgrade continuously. Finally did my NT MCSE in 2000.

True words.

Greatly appreciate the emphasis on automation. All good sysadmins/netadmins are lazy. Automate everything you can. Script everything you can.

Binge vote complete. That was fun.

Yeah, but does Spock really count as a sidekick? He was the Executive Officer. Capable of taking command as needed. More of an equal than a sidekick.

I had not thought of slanting the news in favor to advertisers. Perhaps the advertisers purchase air/ad time based on expected listener base. Listener base would be largely driven by news slant?

I admit, I am a bit of a dinosaur. I have been working in this field for over 30 years. My intoduction to computers was progamming and troubleshooting a mainframe. I entered machine code through a maintenance panel in OCTAL and could execute the program or manually step through the program one instruction at a time. About…

Looks like Windows 10 will be happening at home very soon. Work, however, is a different story.

Far too much thought involved here.

I've been looking forward to this all year! Time to get the creative juices flowing. Since 2020 and Covid will be the common theme, I am hoping my poetry doesn't begin sounding like something from Edgar Allan Poe.

It's all HEX to me.

Chewbacca all the way

My wife gets irritated with me when I comment on these on these faux pas. I just keep silent these days. Now the show Mr. Robot elicits a different reaction. Their screen shots and actions are completely plausible and accurate.

Thank you! I thought I was going to have to wait until I got home to answer this.

I'll take Tonto by my side in a fight any day.

Very well written article! I use TCPdump extensively as a firewall admin. I will pull open a pair of shells, one for each interface on the firewall that requires my attention. I usually know the IP's of interest and the port as well. tcpdump -npi 1-0 host x.x.x.x and host x.x.x.x and port xx. This will show the…
