Alerts are great, like you mentioned when you get a call being able to tell them your already working on the issue is invaluable. Just basic up/down is very important to receive alerts on, but more importantly the things you can't see such as environmental alerts such as a temperature threshold being violated or fan tray…

I often have the most trouble with getting everything together and setup how I want it, once I get a goal defined for what I want the diagram to show I can breeze thru it.

My picks: Macbook Pro 13" Apple Watch 4 More smart home items (Phillips Hue, Ring doorbell, etc.) New Home NAS to replace my old Netgear ReadyNAS
-
I see that most of the time I can see the issue and fix it even before the user notices.

Easier said than done.... It comes down to whether the Business is willing to take on that risk.

I agree the best security analyst is one who has a wide variety of skills and could if they desired be a good hacker. Of course tools like Solarwinds SIEM product help as well...

Managing a NMS always requires some research because every one has its learning curve based on its functionality and feature set, once you know the foundation of monitoring protocols (snmp, ssh, telnet, icmp) then moving from one Vendor to the next start becomes easier. During my time working with different platforms over…

FYI - If you have access to the desktop of the solarwinds server then you can browse to the archive folder and find the original config file. I submitted this same request a couple of weeks ago, it shouldn't be that hard to implement into the next release.

I would say first is reliability of the solution, then followed by tools that allows you to accomplish the goals of your organizations NMS, whether it be basic monitoring of up/down, interface utilization, etc. Finally being able to get it setup how you like and letting it do it's things, have a solution that doesn't…

It seems that now days Network Engineers have to be men and women of different hats, I have found myself in many situations troubleshooting a issue where it has nothing to do with the network, but because we we're blamed first we had to run with the issue as far as we could which a lot of times get the issue/problem…

I believe it tells you the correct answer if you choose the wrong one.

Same here, We used Altris for years and had nothing but problems, now we've switched to SCCM with site DP's(distribution points) and it has helped quite a bit. We still encounter issues every once in a while when a new image is imported and pushed because they set it as a major update so it will push inside of business…

CBT's would be my recommendation, if you already have the subscription then try out a couple videos to get you going, if you like it then I would say to buy some books and continue the process.

We run Palo Alto App-layer firewalls and they really give you a lot insight into whats going on within your network. DPI is good stuff, seems to be the way firewall vendors are moving.

I'm running into this error is there any workaround?, I'm logged in as admin and get this error.

Great post, I think the Proactive Fault Prevention idea is probably the best one of them all but also would be the hardest to implement.

No, I've tested it, if you download the config from the firewall to NCM 7.5 via SCP then you can restore with no problems. I'm not cleaning up the config at all.
-
Make sure you have version 7.5 of NCM, and SCP selected then it should pull from the firewall just like you exported the config from the GUI.
-
Just make sure its transferring the config via SCP

There is also additional logging you can enable for further troubleshooting under the NCM settings -> Advanced Settings
-
Make sure to go into the settings in the syslog or snmp viewer and enable the change detection filter/rule. That one got me when I was setting up change detection.

Downloading the config file from the WEB GUI will be available in the next release of NCM I believe. What We Are Working On For NCM After 7.3
-
This is working now after upgrading to 7.5, just tested and it downloads correctly.
-
BUMP Has anyone upgraded and got it working?

Just add a rule to your syslog server to look at the message type pattern of "ASA-5-1110008" and of course send syslogs to NCM
