I'm in the same boat as all of you! I'm keeping an open mind towards everything - even Hyper-V But that said I have too much time invested in "learning ESXi" to consider switching at this time - thus, not commodity Also I find a lot of hypervisor selection is also political or reliant on past experiences - "We looked at…

Very cool and good for your org! We will have a post soon in regards to testing - but in all honesty I never thought of testing the complete BCP - it's good to see orgs actually carrying out those tasks!

Thanks for the comment!

Fingers crossed! Trials seem to be a very common answer in this thread!
-
Just let the DBA team do what the DBA team does eh?
-
That's a unique way of thinking about it - and to be honest, it would definitely be successful. BC is definitely about the business so yeah, no need to have IT departments and employees to start the DR process - get it going from day 0

So true - the "machine" doesn't always know all of the factors when it comes to right-sizing! I've had plenty of situations where different applications have recommended adding/removing CPU when I knew for a fact that it shouldn't be done!
-
Certainly they are something that are only a priority when we need them right?
-
I've always thought this as well! So many times I've heard of a DR project - well, IMO, it can't be a project. Sure you can have goals and milestones, but it should never end, have no closing ceremonies or sign off! It needs to just be part of the process!

Thanks for the kind words and congrats on getting the site off the ground! I hear you on the "discussion" piece. It's the hardest part trying to get non IT related people to commit to times and numbers - especially when dollars are involved! Service Level Agreements turn into something called Service Level Expectations
-
Apps that are happy with high latency - do such exist? Definitely the amount of data is something to watch out for, especially when paying for transfer to and from! Thanks!
-
Haha, thanks for the straight forward to the point comment
-
Thanks for reading!!

Great idea! Presenting choices really does help! I've done this before as well and have had the same results as you! Aiming for at least "OK"
-
Anything that requires multiple people to agree on common ground will always be a challenge! And I think you are on to something in your stating that it's the biggest challenge! Thanks for the comment
-
So, I can mark you down for a big NO to cloud then? lol! Thanks for the insight!
-
Great idea! Having it already in your environment and being able to show what you will or will not have if you don't have it is key! Kind of like a "you're first hit is free" scenario!
-
Well...unless you start to compare iLO and iDRAC

Very cool - I'll certainly check that out! Thanks!

Thanks for the comment Terry... Were you responsible for database performance before the recent development of hiring a DBA? Or was it something that just fell under the same infrastructure monitoring that you guys had performed? Needless to say I bet someone is happy that a DBA is now present!
-
I see projects such as OpenStack driving the "commodity-van" in terms of the hypervisor! But in my opinion OS is still a big risk - for me anyways...

The times they are a changing (in Enterprise IT speed that is ) Thanks for the comment!
-
Great points! Having clear communication between management and IT certainly mitigates any surprises that may pop up at the worse of times - As for the snow comment, man, I'm sick of it - ready for summer!
-
Great point! They absolutely are key in capacity planning!
-
Definitely equating dollars to the situation would help! Thanks for the answers...
-
Thanks! Seems like a lot of people take the best practices route and do their shrink/re-index/rebuild etc...
-
HI Christopher - Thanks for the awesome answers... I've never considered correlating with man hours lost - that's a great way to prove the need for something..
-
Well, you are off to a good start!
-
certainly we can see some issues with applications that like like to grab all spare CPU/RAM and use it for cache within the application itself! Kinda skews our recommendations!
