I've been working a lot of LEM engagements lately and it's always fun when you get it set up and start showing people what it tells them about their systems and we almost invariably run into some account that none of the admins even knew what it does that logs into half their servers 50,000 times per day. When people…

Nice query, but just a little nitpick, the default polling interval for interfaces is 9 minutes for out of the box environments. you can validate that and check if it has been modified for your environment with this SWQL SELECT SettingID, Name, Description, Units, Minimum, Maximum, CurrentValue, DefaultValue, Hint FROM…

A friend of mine keep asking me what she should study so she can get into IT work, and each time I let her know what companies I've been working with are looking for, then a few months go by and she hasn't studied any of it and she asks again. I've been trying to impress upon her that it isn't as important for her to be…

This would probably help Success Center

was an article the other day I saw about someone with the last name Null. Basically they had to do almost everything via phone calls and special tweaks to get themselves added into most customer databases. They described it as mostly amusing and not "that" inconvenient, but to me not being able to do my business online…

Definitely see a lot of people who have a SIEM and don't really have any plans for it beyond checking a box on their audit then forgetting it exists.

You are preaching to the choir on that one. In the past I used to take about 6 months off every other for me to take long wandering vacations but I found it was limiting my career, haha. I'm figuring as soon as my kid graduates high school I won't be bothered to show up to work anymore. I have it on a spreadsheet so you…

That is a sad truth

My gf just sits here and crunches away at dry captain crunch and all I can think is how bad that would shred my mouth. She must be tough like chuck norris as well

As an interim solution, I use custom tables with HTML to format my own widgets when I want to control that sort of thing, also there's this widget that was created by @"antonis.athanasiou" that allows you to embed CSS styles in the Custom Query widget…

One things I've seen in the past that caused problems was when the security team was deeply segregated from the rest of the IT team. One organization that I worked in had a security team who would try and deny the existence of their LEM appliance. We would fairly routinely have issues that the sysadmins were chasing down…

This reminds me how sad I am when I see how few of the clients I work with are taking advantage of the compliance reports in NCM. Having a network engineer set up some basic configuration rules really only takes a few hours and being able to document and present up the chain about how your network devices have improved…

Once in a while I get asked by a non technical friend about ways to secure their data and in almost every case they are running wifi that is either unencrypted or easily broken. People do not appreciate the easy breezy nature of wireless communications comes with some significant risks.

They are definitely already working on that feature, if it wasn't released in the current version.
-
Have you looked at the audit log? I always wish it was a bit more detailed but it does already do the things you mentioned.
-
Agreed, a few years back I spent an afternoon trying to get familiar enough with web development to build a widget like that myself but never quite got it where I needed it.

wluther this is your white whale right?

Remove the line that says n.PollingIPAddress like '%${SEARCH_STRING}%' or there is no column in the table with that name, and it would be the same as n.ipaddress anyway When you are working out your custom queries the best place to do it is the install the SDK, https://github.com/solarwinds/OrionSDK/releases/tag/v2.0.50 ,…

My wife constantly tells people im a computer scientist, and i constantly correct her since that's not even close to what I do...

It is funny/sad for me because I work with lots of different companies all the time and I often see administrators who are running themselves to the ragged edge in terms of their workload but when I show them how to use these kind of features in NCM and they often give me something along the lines of "looks nice but I…

From past discussions with the NCM PM's advanced NCM scripters usually complain about the limitations of the proprietary NCM language, such as not being able to apply a command parse the returned data to make logic decisions. Due to the success of projects like Nornir and Netmiko there is an existing community of…

I can agree with that, I felt the issue was the level to which they cloistered themselves away and refused to acknowledge the fact that we were all on the same team, not just IT but within the organization as a whole. It would be comparable to the accounting department not notifying us that a purchase order to one of our…

I always used to think that if you think of discovered objects full life cycle it would make sense to have their discovery mapped to the rules about monitored child objects, plus applied SAM templates (not just the Appinsights) and to be able to set custom properties all in one go.

Have you just tried to force the join the way you expect and confirm if the built in link works the same way? I've only ever seen it do inner joins, but maybe you stumbled across a bug in how that link was built?

I did a job with a federal agency and I was made aware of at least 3 completely separate Solarwinds installations in the building I was in. It was pretty interesting to see how the different political and territorial boundaries were jamming up their ability to collaborate on monitoring.

I don't want to admit how many days I worked from my phone hotspot in my consulting days. Only a couple times was it actually due to internet failure, usually it was because I'd often mix vacations in with my remote work. Sitting in a hotel taking advantage of the late checkout policy to do my work (hyatts let high status…

I might actually be able to sit in on this one. I'm usually pretty busy training people on Solarwinds products during the live events so this will be nice.

I had once incident in the last few years where auto sensing didn't work, but by and large auto seems to work these days

Competing on hardware is boring, we need more widgets!
-
It normally does exactly that already, what kind of devices are you seeing this problem? There is not a "default" 10 MB value, it defaults to unknown in cases where it doesn't get them from the hardware and you just wouldn't see any percentages at all.
