pokengx, A couple of other things you might want to check. First, make sure the SolarWinds NetFlow Service is running on your Orion server. Also, make sure that you are monitoring all of the interfaces you want NetFlow data from in Orion. Finally, make sure in your ip flow export statement that you are sending your Netflow…

jcollazo09, If there is a feature you'd like to see added to Orion, go to the Feature Request forum and let SW know. You can get to it here: thwack.com/.../

We have the same issue when trying to use System Manager to connect to a poller on a different server. The error message we get is "Cannot connect to [server name] Permission denied. Be sure the server [server name] has full access rights to the client."

I agree with Chris. Having to type in the custom property when adding a node isn't a very convenient way to do this. Can SolarWinds add drop down lists or the same arrow down functionality utilized for adding the ro snmp string? Thanks!

Another option if you want to try and get some of both would be to get the Engineer Toolkit and use the free Real-Time NetFlow Analyzer. You won't get as much functionality with the free Analyzer as you will with the NetFlow module for Orion, but you can still take advantage of the information available from NetFlow (it…

I agree with Brandon as I obviously didn't read your question closely enough. I saw the part about gathering devices into containers and immediately thought of the node tree on the left hand side of the map maker application. I'm hoping in the new version of Map Maker we'll be able to group nodes other than by vendor. When…

Robert, We used Sigma for a three day engagement at our site. Our trainer was very knowledgeable about Orion and did a good job walking users through Orion's capabilities. We had groups outside the network team in the training sessions and the material was presented in such a way that server admin and automation team…

Thanks for the info, Ondrej. That's not the behavior I would have expected but now I know it's by design and not an error. Could you tell me the reasoning behind not having IPAM delete scopes that no longer exist in DHCP? IPAM at least alerts you when new scopes are found, could it not do the same for scopes that have been…

When I started configuring advanced alerts, I noticed the variables seemed to be different between the basic and advanced alerts. I finally broke down and looked them up in the admin guide. There is a list of variables that start on page 260 for the advanced alerts.

That workaround is what I needed. I'm a bit baffled as to why no one from the support team told me to try that. Someone might want to make sure support knows about the workaround, as this has been an issue for me for over a year. Thanks!

I've seen the SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor service take a very long time to shut down in the past. I generally try to shut my services down before I apply any upgrades. Thanks for the info!

Don, mdriskell is correct about the statistics being stored in the database for historical reference. I think for most of the charts and graphs, the default time frame is set to Today. If you haven't changed that setting, those charts would show all input/output errors, discards, etc. since midnight. Hope this helps!
-
I was going to suggest that as well but I wasn't sure if a variable from an advanced alert would work. I'd be interested in hearing the results.
-
If I understand you correctly, you're looking for the default settings for montoring thresholds in Orion. You can find these settings (and change them as required) by logging into the admin page and clicking "NPM Settings" in the Settings section. Hope this helps.

I haven't done a PDA, but I did create a basic summary page for my Blackberry. I created a view that just shows downed nodes and nodes with downed interfaces.

We are currently in the process of turning up NetFlow and NDE in our environment, so we're just beginning to use the tool on a daily basis. Currently, we're keeping 120 minutes of uncompressed data and 14 days of compressed data. After we determine what NTA does to the size of our database, I expect to increase the amount…

kulastone, I think most of the information you're looking for can be found in the Orion Administrator Guide. There is a section about additional polling engines that begins on page 271. www.solarwinds.com/.../OrionAdministratorGuide.pdf Hope this helps!

gizzib, I've got several reports that I only pull statistics for during business hours. I've never gotten very good at pasting screen shots into posts on Thwack, so the attached Word doc has a couple of screen shots from Report Writer that might help. The key is in the Filter Results tab. You'll filter your records based…

You're right, reports only populate on the main server. I just take the manual approach. Any time I create a new report or update one, I copy the file to the additional web server. It can be a pain since it's an extra step but I like that I can hit the Orion site on the main server and tweak the report before pushing it…

In version 8.5.1 SP3, if you scroll down when the custom chart page opens, there is an option between Chart Size and Font Size labeled Data Table Below Chart. It is a Yes or No drop down box. The default setting is No.

monty, I haven't done much alerting from custom pollers, but I was wondering if you happen to have anything configured under the alert suppression tab. This probably isn't your issue, but I have run into problems in the past with alerts not firing when I tried to include suppression.

patriot, If you log in with a user that has rights to change the view, you can add columns by clicking on the two great than >> symbols on the far right hand side of the column headers. Just click the >> and select the columns you want displayed. Hope this helps!

janschets, I have a report that I think is similar to what you describe in your post. Mine only has one complex condition but I think it produces the results you're looking for. My filters select records based on day of the week and time of day along with a couple of custom properties to report for a specific agency. I've…

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you can browse the MIB tree when you create a new universal device poller. In the Define Your Universal Device Poller window, click the Browse MIB Tree button. That will allow you to drill down through the MIB tree to find and test the OID you're looking for. Once you find your…

I've also seen this when you replace a device with a different model but use the same IP address. For example, you replace a Cisco 1720 router with a 2851. Your FastEthernet0 interface will be replaced by a GigabitEthernet0/0 interface. You'll have to manually delete the missing interface. You can do that by going to Node…

lchance, We've got a few ASA 5505s out there that we are monitoring with Orion. We're using snmp v2, so they don't force you to use v3. One thing I've noticed (but haven't really dug into much) is although we get bandwidth utilization stats for the interfaces in bps, we don't get percent utilization stats. Hope this helps.
-
Geoo, Depending on your version of IOS, you might only get layer 3 data from NetFlow. The layer 2 support didn't show up until 12.3(14)T. Hope this helps.

You have another option here as well. If you check the properties of the first map in Network Atlas, in the status section there is a check box labeled "Include child status." If you check that box, your first map would warning, down or unknown, but would have a smaller, red square indicating a child object is down. You…

Try this UnDP. I think this might give you what you're looking for.

LC, I don't poll devices on the far side of a VPN tunnel any differently than I do any other remote site. We're a Cisco shop, so all I did on the device configs was to include traffic from the Orion poller in the access list that defines "interesting" traffic for the tunnel. The default idle timeout for an IP Sec tunnel…
