I'm with bsciencefiction.tv A properly compensated and staffed Company (not just IT) Also ALL the MONITORING tools, cause really, can you have too much data about your environment ...and a pool table in the break room. Cause I miss the days of having one at the office, not because there is any real IT need ;-)

The Geek Gang Rides Again! Nerd Herd, makes me laugh though. :-)

So, most of the servers I support are onsite in retail locations. The are often found in various places, under desks, in closets, on some random shelf, and taken care of about as well as you'd expect. My 'favorite' so far, was coming in to find one of the locations had a water pipe burst, in the same room as the equipment,…

"When an entire server can be rebuilt in the blink of an eye, the best response to a poorly behaving service is truly not to fix the issue." --which is great, until you keep having the same issue over and over and now you've replicated it to every server in you structure/organization. --You also have to know when a…

Haven't set anything up yet, but hope to soon :-)

Did they ever make the Puss-in-Boots movie?

Nice!

I just purposefully requested read-only access to a database, because the actual DBA knows less about it than I do....what have I done to myself?! ;-)

Dear Network, As a sysadmin, I'm sorry, not sorry, I always place the blame on you. <3 ~K

The battle brackets each March are truly my favorite thing on thwack ever! Thanks wabbott!

Referring to question for the 16th: I think the twist here, is that we are rather conditioned that we will find all of the answers we need on the same page, if information isn't there, we conclude that it isn't one of the answers. That I find a titch annoying, cause I didn't even realize those blurbs *were* links. as said,…

DanielleH I hadn't noticed the Missions tab in my profile. Thanks for pointing that out! ~K

Process Monitoring....I'd really like some of that, Server up/down is nice and all, but knowing that my processes are running smoothing would be nicer. Training Budget...I want to learn all the new shiny things! Automation would be good too, lets not have to wait 3 weeks for a VM Project organization and less drive bys to…

So, it's not as impressive as other user stories written here, but I've got some figures for you. While we were trialing SAM, I was able to have eyes on an application that approximately 470 developers use to drive their development cycle. The application would occasionally hang during a reindexing over night and wouldn't…

Every time he posts this, the end creeps up on us faster.....

Thanks Leon, I am looking forward to Parts 2 & 3! You've heard me speak about this in Open Sessions at DevOps as well, and I think this is a very important topic to have discussions on. I think unplugging has a lot to do with controlling burnout as well. I'm quite eager to hear about what others think of unplugging and…

I really like the way you have the field for the weekly winner. That's pretty awesome!

thank you for this very insightful post. I have trained a few new comers to tech over the years, and my advice to them always it go ahead and make mistakes, we all do, and since you are going to, you better learn something from it. I had a guy delete an entire db one night. (backed up and replicated, so no real down time,…

actually my network is pretty lucky to not have me as an admin. I'd be the reason all of the bandwidth was taken up!

I wish these classes were available to people outside the customer portal.

Which is worse, writing out a story of work life for 3k, or replying to this thread to get 50? #pointshound #whatwouldyoudoforthwackpoints #allyourpointsarebelongtome

Hey, That's right...I can still petition for the Columbus Area Leader ;-) That would rock my world. I've been kinda jonesing for a user group and thought about seeing if anyone wanted to do an informal meetup style thing in town. Since I know that there is more than one of us that use it around here

What's an SLA...? and These are not the SLAs you are looking for, were somewhat common phrases in some of my previous employments.....

Whatsup, and some Atlassian products (Jira, Confluence), a bit of Splunk are tools here. We use Solarwinds for some of the network monitoring, but mainly use Whatsup for server and applications. I'm working on getting them on to more of the Solarwinds products, once they let me get my grubby hands on it. :-)

WTG Leon Adato! I knew from the moment I met you that you were top of the class of geekdom! :-) I *loved* Microsoft Bob! .....when I was 13. I didn't think anyone but me had ever played with it, and certainly didn't think anyone would remember it!
