When I was at my last job and everything was done via email or text message we used the same method as mentioned above. Where I am at now we have a full paging service provided by SPOK and we are able to send more robust messages out via similar methods.

We use NPM to monitor real time status and availability of our network and utilize NCM to perform backups and push changes to our entire fleet of hardware.

We utilize active directory groups for the different departments (sysadmin, DBA, Network, App admins, management). Anyone outside of this is added as a single user with just the specific access that they require to do their job successfully.
