HP/Aruba are not currently supported under the firmware upgrade feature within NCM. You are welcome to create a Feature Request here, others can vote on it and it will be visible to myself and others in the product team.

What would you want to see out of Clearpass?

If you are using the Firmware Upgrade feature specifically, it is currently constrained to Cisco only. I encourage you to upvote this feature (link below) - I as a PM, will review the commonly voted on features for future consideration.

What issue did you encounter with the default template?

Dennis - As long as you are running v7.8 or newer it will already have both the Network Insight for Cisco Nexus and ASA prebuilt into the software.
