  • Those sorts of errors do show up in the syslog, but I'm unaware of any internal counters in IOS that keep track of memory errors, the one exception being alignment errors.
  • quote:Originally posted by joesim Can Orion monitor memory errors on Cisco devices, or does this require a custom MIB? I'm curious. What kind of memory error are you wanting to monitor?
  • Thanks! I thought I'd read on here somewhere that we could not unmanage specific interfaces. Perhaps either I misread that or it was an old message related to an older version and I just didn't check the date. John
  • No, this is not possible at this time. It seems like it's on the roadmap for a future version of Orion but I haven't been able to determine if it's going to be in v8 or not.
  • WHOA! Have you looked at the server requirements for Scrutinizer? It requires 40 GB for the application alone, and 80 GB of storage for the Enterprise version of the product. Yowza! It looks pretty cool but it's not as nice as NFA. However, the ability to integrate it with Orion--not to mention the lower price--might…
  • In addition to looking at Orion NPM, we are also looking at getting a NetFlow monitoring application. I downloaded demos of the ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer, as well as Crannog's NetFlow Tracker. I first installed the ManageEngine product and saw how cool it was. Very, very nice! I then installed the Crannog application…
  • Hey, that's pretty neat that it automatically adjusts which value to grab based on the polling interval. Thanks! John
  • I saw that post and I was hoping those guys would answer in my thread. I'd like to find out more about their reasons for switching from Concord to Orion, or for even considering the switch if it hasn't happened yet.
  • quote:Originally posted by skaczkowski We've spent ohhhhhhh... A LOT on Concord, I think our anual maintenance (software MAINTENANCE, we ALREADY own the damned thing) runs us around ~$30K if I'm not mistaken. So for $40K LESS we get a product that's about 10 times easier to setup and 50 times as functional as 2 products…
  • I was referring to TCP port monitoring.
  • I also forgot about dependencies. Orion *really* needs a scalable method of determining device dependencies and only alerting on the root cause. I know that Orion offers alert depencies right now, but it's my understanding that it is all manually configured and I've read elsewhere in the forums that it doesn't scale well.…
  • We're currently evaluating a number of network monitoring products and Orion continues to maintain our interest. It isn't as functional as some of the others we're looking at, but it is far simpler to implement, configure, and maintain. It's missing just a couple of things that would make it a no-brainer for me: 1. Custom…
  • You won't be able to do this from Orion until custom MIB monitoring becomes available.
  • We're going to buy exactly the same server. It's going to have 2x146 GB storage on it. That should last for a while.
  • I thought that the DB that comes with Orion had a limit of 2 GB? The way you phrased your reply makes it sound as if the DB that comes with the SLX version has a larger capacity. Is that true?
  • On the one hand, I keep hearing how easy Orion is to use. But on the other hand, I also keep hearing about how hard it is to manage. Orion has multiple user interfaces depending on the task, and something as important as adding/removing nodes is one of the most difficult tasks. This has come up many times since I've been…
  • I thought you could use a GUI for everything in Orion? Are you saying that there is no GUI for adding/removing nodes or interfaces? Isn't that kind of a pain in the hiney?
  • This sort of functionality should be built into Orion. For security reasons, we're not allowed to enable Telnet on most of our network devices, so the current Telnet function doesn't help much. Having a T and an S button would be pretty handy!
  • There is already a beta SNMP trap receiver available, if I remember correctly. Have you tried it?
  • Here's another feature that I would LOVE to see: get rid of IIS and move to Apache or some other web server. Everyone in our IT department seriously dislikes IIS and our technically-minded Executive VP doesn't even want it in our network, if at all possible. If Orion supported custom MIBs and port monitoring *and* it ran…
  • DTuloJr, you echo my thoughts exactly. I was just in a meeting yesterday regarding increasing our infrastructure monitoring. I told the people in the meeting that I was evaluating Orion but they lost interest in it when I told that we can't use custom MIBs. Much of what we need to monitor is not in the standard MIB. We…
  • quote:Originally posted by Mithrilhall 3rd Quarter......Oh well. I guess I'll just keep adding custom pieces until then. On a side note... I found this today and it works pretty good for spicing up gauges and graphs. www.maani.us/.../index.php Now, if Solarwinds could build something like this into Orion I would be…
  • I would really like to see someone from Orion follow up on this post. As I've mentioned a bunch of times already, we're currently evaluating several different network management applications. Orion would be my first choice if it had just a few more features. We have a meeting/demo with Concord (CA) tomorrow about the…
  • I have nothing to add to this other than to say that I'm also glad to see fellow GroupStudy members here. There are also fellow Tek-Tips members here. This must be the place to be!
  • Are there any plans to move to an entirely web-based interface? One of the reasons I was drawn to NPM was that I thought it was entirely web-based. My company uses an SSL VPN remote access system for access to our network from home, and I'd love to be able to have full functionality of this sort of application through the…
  • Ugh. That's not good news. For some reason, I was under the impression that most of NPM was web-based. I try to minimize having to use remote console access products on Windows devices. It's slow and painful, and only one user at a time can be accessing it unless you use something like VNC, which is even slower. Then…
  • So, that map creation utility isn't web-based? I was under the impression that all of NPM was web-based, but it sounds like map creation must be done at the console, or through remote console access via VNC or something like that. Is that right? Are there any other parts of NPM that are not web-based? Thanks! John
  • You would need custom MIB monitoring, which Orion does not yet have. I've heard that it might be coming in v8, but who knows when that will be available. This is a perfect example of why we need custom MIB monitoring! Orion is a very good product but it has a few holes, and custom MIB monitoring is a big one. I'm very glad…
  • I would love to see this. In some secure environments, like ours, Telnet is not allowed. So, a Telnet link does me no good whatsoever.
  • Thanks! I'm going to be out of the office most of next week but I'll give you a call when I get back. John
