Great posting. It is strange how many times in my IT career has the phrase "When was the last time the backups were tested?" and the awkward stare onto the ceiling. I was taught eons ago that the first thing you do when you start the day is the test restore some files from random points in the backup set. Then, take the…

This is some scary thinking. I am part of a team that is in the process of implementing a SIEM system. We have passed the first phase and have the basics up and running. Now, I will have another layer to think about. Good thoughts!

That is unfortunately how we grow. We have to be shown incompetent and then prove to ourselves otherwise. Never be afraid to tell co-workers/customers that "I don't know the answer, but I will find out and get back to you" In my 34 years in IT, that has been the most powerful lesson I learned and I also embody in my junior…

Even more interesting is that companies that build using embedded XP keep deploying because it is already setup and the engineers know how to make their application run on it. But, I would think that customer's would start complaining and not purchasing products if they contain XP. Working in healthcare as well, issues…

Any good write-up. Thanks!

Good information as we are just heading down this path. The IP Spreadsheet is getting unwieldly and we need something better.

You mean WarGames: The Dead Code wasn't a good remake of the original? Tech will always be fantasy in the eyes of Hollywood, due to what we really do is not audience money worthy. Kind of like how detective stories always glamorize some small detail of the fictional character and do not really show the amount of effort to…

Interesting topic and interesting discussion. Our network gear is also in the quick recovery. Have spares of common components available and then the critical stuff is configured with redundancy.

This is a worthwhile discussion as it seems no matter how good your help desk team members or how many problems they resolve per day, perception is always "do I have to call the help desk" Getting further down the road, have an effective search and ticketing system, an effective method of dispersing consistent problem…

We implemented a SIEM system and had many of those questions trying to determine what should or should not be included. Then, we spent a long time trying to determine and validating the information. Finally, the biggest question of all. So now what? We are pouring huge gobs of data at this system and yet it seems that we…

It is interesting to read across this blog and see the topics from the earlier days, and see that these same topics are now coming to fruition.

Now this post has sparked my curiosity and I will have to look over my 6509 and 6513. Thanks!

That's a really good point. Microfocusing on ticket counts will cause a "panic" mode to engage as the number will jump sharply. I will have to ponder that some more as we are transistioning to new service desk platform.
