As long as the goal of the documentation is to remove tribal knowledge and at the same time increase the overall knowledge level of the organization, the method of the actual documentation is not as important as much as there is documentation.

It would seem that part of the cloud environment, there should be a management interface abstraction provided that would allow us to use whatever tools we want and provide standardized reporting. We would need more than ping capability.

The benefits of using Netflow is great. It will be interesting to see what happens with configuring Netflow v9 on Cisco WLC controllers. Otherwise, the configuration is straightforward and very enlightening. THanks for the post!

After years of struggling to get just getting the minimum out of products, I was intrigued by the product community of Solarwinds. I have found this to be an excellent resource of product knowledge and community.

Sage advice for any IT person.

"It’s worth reiterating the importance of looking at the whole environment when considering application performance." This is a great comment to take to heart. I have been part of so many teams that want to simply blame the other areas rather take the holistic view of what the issues are. A great engineer friend of mine as…

I am in a similar situation whereby I do not receive a lot of NOC tickets but only the occasional ticket. The bulk of my time is spent working on new projects and technology within my designated assignments. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-60 systems, applications, and hardware projects. We value time spent on projects…

Interesting write up. As a computer scientist, I have begun to ponder what is next. I have had issues with ML and/or Predictive ML catching me off guard. Things should work but didn't. Thanks for the post.

We do not have a lot of automated scripting but we do have a large WIKI with common tasks. It took me about 2 months to come up to speed with the contents of the WIKI when I started with the company. We also do an excellent job of communicating changes and projects down to the help desk, so they are prepared for possible…

Nice listing. Got all the key points. After my long IT career I can say I don't think I could have quite bubbled it down so nicely to 5.

These are good points. The critical statement is to be able to respond immediately not delayed.

These links provide good reference material. I can see the benefit of change approval and auditing.

This been a good discussion and matches my long time experience in the IT field.

Informative post. And great discussion. Thanks!

Interesting thoughts. Trying to get other departments to trust the results of the monitoring is interesting. They can't believe that they have that many issues or geez we always just blame the network when the interfaces go down, but now that I see it is not the network---time to work with the vendor to ACTUALLY fix the…

That's what I am hoping for when we get to that point with an IPAM solution.

I have to admit. I am really looking forward to this series. In my long a varied life, there are lots of things I wish I could tell my younger self.
