cahunt, you raise another good point there about the loss of events. If I lose the fan or power supply and the message is lost for some reason, will we ever know it was lost? The alternative is that the chassis sends out the alert periodically until the problem is fixed, but that has its own issues, not least more noise…

I like the idea of moving older data out of the production DB. I see on your profile that you've got a broad range of experience to call on, so if you don't mind me asking, how have you found product support to have been for splitting the DB like that, or have you had to develop your own mechanisms for migrating old data…

I'm interested in the idea that you absolutely hate learning a language (and you can't say why). I wonder, when you sit down to learn a new language, how do you go about that? Do you go to one of the online resources (future post ;-) ) and follow one of the courses there? Or follow a "<language> in 21 days" kind of book?…
